Electric Trucks Capture Half of Heavy-Duty Truck Sales in China

The heavy-duty transport sector in China witnessed a radical transformation during September 2026, as electric trucks accounted for 50.3% of total heavy-duty truck sales, recording the sale of 33,100 trucks in a single month. This figure represents a 37% growth compared to the previous year, at a time when the traditional heavy-duty truck market shrank by 21%.

Why This Transformation Matters

These figures exceeded the Chinese government targets that aimed to reach a 40% share by 2030, indicating unprecedented acceleration in the adoption of clean technologies. This shift is mainly due to economic feasibility; the cost of owning and operating electric trucks in China has become lower than their diesel counterparts, supported by massive expansion in battery-swapping infrastructure.

Declining Demand for Diesel

This trend has directly reflected on energy consumption data, as China's demand for diesel is heading toward a reduction of 230,000 barrels per day during 2026. Battery-powered and natural gas trucks play the largest role in this displacement, with estimates indicating that electric trucks alone have significantly reduced demand for diesel, putting China on a fast track to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in the road freight sector.

Infrastructure and the Swapping Model

Battery swapping technology is the core pillar of this success, with CATL leading this trend by expanding its network of swapping stations. The company plans to reach 2,000 stations by 2027, in addition to acquiring a major stake in Qiyuan Green Power, ensuring the availability of standardized batteries that can be swapped within five minutes, which solves the long charging time dilemma that used to hinder the adoption of electric trucks.

International Comparison

In contrast, adoption in the United States and Europe remains slow compared to China. In the European Union, the share of electric trucks does not exceed 2.5%, while in the United States, the percentage remains below 1%, with a large price gap as the cost of an electric truck in America is more than double the cost of a traditional truck. Analysts point out that the next challenge lies in the ability of Chinese companies to export these economic models to Western markets, which may pressure traditional manufacturers to rethink their pricing and technology strategies.
