A technical analysis of Google Photos app files (version 8.0) has revealed a new upcoming feature aimed at enhancing automation capabilities using artificial intelligence. The feature, which will be part of the Ask Photos tool, allows users to convert photos containing event posters or invitations into directly recorded calendar appointments, without the need for manual data entry.
How It Works and System Integration
According to what was extracted from the source code, the feature will ask the user to grant calendar access permission upon its first use. Once permission is obtained, Ask Photos can analyze the image content to extract accurate information such as: event name, date, time, and the description available on the poster.
Technically, the feature is not limited to the Google Calendar app; rather, the data appears via a confirmation window belonging to the Android system itself. This indicates that the feature will be compatible with any calendar app the user uses as their default option on their device, and the recorded event will also be linked to a direct link that returns the user to the original photo in the photo gallery for reference when needed.
What Changes in Practice?
The added value lies in reducing the effort spent on managing daily tasks. Instead of having to leave the photo gallery, open the calendar app, and then write the details of a party or conference seen on a paper poster, artificial intelligence will do the heavy lifting. This shift makes the process of converting visual information into organized data an immediate and seamless process, reducing the likelihood of forgetting events that are captured incidentally.
Accuracy Challenges and Time Zone Errors
Despite the promising potential, initial tests have shown gaps related to AI accuracy, specifically in handling time zones. In one experimental case, the system assumed US Pacific Time for an event located in the city of Dallas, which led to the appointment being recorded at a completely wrong time when converted to the user's local time.
The problem arises because the confirmation window provided by the Android system does not clearly display the time zone, making it difficult for the user to detect the error before confirming the appointment. This point remains a reminder of the necessity to review data generated by artificial intelligence, especially since Google is aware of these limitations and includes warnings stating that "AI may make mistakes".
This development comes as part of a package of upcoming updates for Google Photos, which also includes new editing tools and improved support for RAW photos, although Google has not yet officially announced the release date of these features to the public.
