STATION F, the world's largest startup campus, has announced its "Future 40" list for 2026, featuring the most promising companies emerging from its ecosystem in Paris. This announcement coincides with the campus revealing that startups within its ecosystem achieved a record €2 billion in funding during 2026, surpassing the €1.5 billion mark recorded the previous year.
Strategic Shift: Returning from Silicon Valley
One of the most notable phenomena revealed in this year's edition is the return of founders from the United States to Europe. The new list includes six companies that previously participated in the renowned "Y Combinator" accelerator in Silicon Valley but chose to return to France to build their global businesses. This trend reflects growing confidence in the European ecosystem's ability to support major tech companies, benefiting from lower operating costs compared to San Francisco and the availability of high-level engineering talent.
Sovereign AI and Physical Robotics
The "Future 40" list covers advanced technical fields including artificial intelligence, deeptech, developer infrastructure, robotics, and climate tech. "Sovereign AI" and "Physical AI" have emerged as key themes this year. Notable companies in this context include:
- Arlequin AI: A deeptech platform for supporting sensitive decisions, which raised €28 million in funding.
- Bleu Robotics: Working on developing AI models for industrial humanoid robots.
- AICE: Developing low-cost underwater drone swarms to protect critical infrastructure.
The Growth of Bootstrapping
The report indicated that five companies on the list are entirely bootstrapped, a trend reinforced by the proliferation of AI tools that allow small teams to accomplish tasks that previously required an army of employees. For example, the company "Oguste" managed to achieve €400,000 in annual recurring revenue in less than a year without resorting to external funding, while "Revox" used an intelligent agent to conduct 250 sales calls in one month, a task that would have previously required several sales representatives.
What is Practically Changing in the Tech Ecosystem?
STATION F's success in attracting €2 billion in investments reflects a maturation of the French market, driven by massive funding rounds for alumni companies such as "Multiverse Computing" (€500 million) and "Alan" (€480 million). However, challenges remain regarding a lack of liquidity in late-stage funding compared to the US market.
The nature of the founders is also changing; 47% of the selected startup teams hold at least one PhD, and 75% are repeat founders, signaling a shift toward more technically and scientifically complex projects rather than simple consumer applications.
Industrial Partnerships to Foster Innovation
The campus relies on strategic partnerships with industry giants to turn innovations into reality. A partnership with "Sanofi" provides support for medtech companies in AI-driven drug discovery, while "TotalEnergies" uses its relationship with the campus as part of its acquisition strategy, acquiring up to four companies annually from within the tech campus.
