Expanding the Scope of MaliSX2: A Major Boost for GameCube and Xbox Emulators on Non-Snapdragon Devices

It appears that users of devices powered by Arm Mali processors (such as MediaTek devices, older Pixel and Samsung phones, and specialized handheld devices) are about to get an emulation experience closer to that of Snapdragon users. The MaliSX2 project has announced the expansion of its support to include the Dolphin and HakuX emulators, opening the door to running GameCube, Wii, and original Xbox games with better quality and performance.

Breaking the Snapdragon Monopoly in the World of Emulation

Snapdragon processors have long been the preferred platform for emulation enthusiasts on Android, primarily due to the availability of custom Turnip drivers for Adreno processors. These custom drivers provide massive leaps in performance, compatibility improvements, and bug fixes that standard system drivers cannot handle. However, Mali processor users have remained dependent on default system drivers, which limited their ability to run demanding games.

The MaliSX2 project comes as a solution to this gap, acting as a graphics driver via the Vulkan interface specifically for Arm Mali processors. The project achieved notable success when it was first launched within the ARMSX2 emulator (dedicated to PS2 games), where users reported that games like Ace Combat 4 and 5 were able to run smoothly after previously being unplayable.

Why Does This News Matter?

This expansion represents a significant shift in the Android emulation landscape for several reasons:

  • Expanding the user base: High-performance emulation is no longer exclusive to owners of devices powered by Snapdragon processors.
  • Multi-platform support: Moving from PS2 emulation only to supporting GameCube, Wii, and Xbox platforms expands the range of games available to MediaTek users and others.
  • Improving handheld devices: Users of handheld gaming devices that rely on Mali processors will benefit directly from these improvements.

Current Status and Technical Limitations

Despite the promising potential, the project is still in its early development stages. Currently, MaliSX2 support is available in development builds of the Dolphin emulator only via graphics settings, while it has not yet reached the official and stable versions of the HakuX emulator.

Initial reports also indicate that the performance improvement may not be significantly tangible at this stage; tests conducted on an Anbernic RG477V device showed modest results when running games like Tony Hawk’s Underground. However, experts expect results to improve drastically as the project matures and the drivers stabilize, just as it happened with the ARMSX2 emulator.
