Launch of "Personal Finance" feature in Claude AI assistant for direct bank account linking

Anthropic has announced the launch of a new personal finance management feature for its AI assistant, Claude, allowing users to link bank accounts and credit cards directly to the platform via the banking integration platform Plaid. This move aims to help individuals track their expenses and understand their budgets in an easier, more interactive way.

How does the Personal Finance feature work in Claude?

The new integration allows users to ask the AI assistant direct questions such as "Where did my money go this month?" Claude then generates an overview that includes a breakdown of expenses, such as rent, utilities, shopping, and food. The assistant can also answer broader inquiries regarding remaining bills before the next payday, the affordability of large purchases, and the amount of money that can be saved monthly.

Security mechanism and restrictions

The feature operates with read-only permissions. Thanks to the Plaid platform mediating the connection, the Claude assistant cannot access the user's banking passwords, and banks do not have to deal with unverified AI bots scanning accounts. Anthropic emphasizes that Claude is not designed to move, manage, or invest money, nor is it designed to provide financial advice. However, it can see bank and account names, types, the last four digits of account numbers, balances, credit limits, and transaction history for up to two years.

Current availability and market competition

The Personal Finance feature in Claude is being rolled out gradually as a beta version this week for Claude Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the United States. This announcement follows a similar move by OpenAI, which introduced a comparable feature for ChatGPT last May, which also connects to bank accounts via the Plaid platform.

What does this mean for users?

This step represents an initial phase toward integrating artificial intelligence into personal money management. Anthropic indicates that making major life financial decisions requires Claude to work alongside licensed professionals and trusted companies, noting that it is exploring ways to achieve this in collaboration with banks, wealth managers, and financial firms.
