Spotify Launches Audiobook Service in Turkey with Technical Features to Bridge Print and Digital Reading

Spotify has officially announced the launch of its audiobook service in Turkey, as part of its ambitious expansion plan to reach more than 180 markets worldwide by the end of 2026. The new service provides access to a massive library containing more than 350,000 audiobooks, focusing in its initial phase on content available in English.

The service is available via an add-on subscription known as "Audiobooks+", where subscribers (whether on free or premium plans) can listen to 15 hours of audiobooks per month for 149 Turkish Lira. The platform also offers the option to purchase additional hours, allowing users to get 10 extra hours for 159 Turkish Lira, noting that the system only counts actual listening time and renews the hours with each billing cycle.

What distinguishes the listening experience on Spotify?

The platform offers a set of technical features aimed at enhancing the user experience and integrating it with traditional reading habits, most notably:

  • Page Match feature: This feature aims to bridge the gap between print and digital reading; users can scan the ISBN barcode of a printed book and enter the page number to continue listening via the audiobook from where they left off in the physical copy. The company announced that this feature has already been used by more than one million people and supports over 30 languages.
  • Cross-device synchronization: The system supports synchronizing listening progress across more than 2,000 different devices, allowing for a seamless transition between the phone, car, and smart speakers.
  • Smart recommendations: The platform relies on data analysis algorithms to provide personalized book suggestions based on the user's music and podcast listening history.
  • Additional options: The service includes features such as a sleep timer and the ability to listen offline.

New horizons for publishers and authors

The service is not limited to consumers alone; it also opens a new technical path for content creators via the "Spotify for Authors" tool. This tool allows independent publishers and authors in Turkey to upload their works, reach a global user base in over 180 markets, and obtain accurate data on listener behavior.

Spotify relies on a "non-exclusive" content distribution model, meaning publishers can continue to distribute their books through traditional channels while benefiting from the Spotify platform as an additional distribution channel. This move comes at a time when audiobook services are witnessing remarkable growth, with Spotify recording a 40% increase in monthly listeners and a 30% increase in total listening time globally over the past year.
