Google launches left-behind alert feature for tracking devices via Find Hub

Google has launched a long-awaited feature for users of the Find Hub network on Android, namely the "Notify when left behind" feature, which aims to notify users as soon as their tracking devices move away from their phones.

How does the new feature work?

The feature allows users to receive an instant notification as soon as the tracking device disconnects from the phone. To enable this property, the user must open the Find Hub app, select the desired tracking device, and then enter the device settings via the gear icon in the upper corner.

The feature includes an automatic exception for the location registered as "Home" in the Google account (via Google Maps), in order to prevent sending unnecessary alerts while the user is inside their home.

What changes practically for users?

This addition is a fundamental step to improve the efficiency of the Find Hub network, as it lacked this basic functionality since its launch. The feature is currently available in version 3.1.787-06 of the app, and supports specific tracking devices such as Chipolo and Moto Tag, while it is still not available for other devices such as headphones.

In addition, Google indicated that this feature will be part of the new device registration flow, which also includes the ability to assign classification icons for devices (such as bicycles, bags, or wallets) and rename them. The company also confirmed upcoming support for NFC technology, which will facilitate access to tracking device details or identifying lost devices simply by touching them with the phone.

Why does this update matter?

This feature is considered a basic standard in modern tracking devices, and Google's delay in providing it made the Find Hub network less competitive compared to alternatives available in the market. Through this update, Google seeks to enhance the user experience and reduce the likelihood of losing personal belongings, making the system more reliable in daily use.
