Vodafone Egypt begins commercial use of the Ericsson RAN Processor 6672 at network sites

Vodafone Egypt has begun the commercial use of the Ericsson RAN Processor 6672, designed to run artificial intelligence workloads and support 5G networks directly within network sites. Ericsson says the processor increases processing capacity fourfold and reduces energy consumption by more than 50% compared with the previous generation.

Vodafone Egypt begins commercial use of the Ericsson RAN Processor 6672 at network sites

Ericsson and Vodafone Egypt announced the start of commercial use of the Ericsson RAN Processor 6672, as part of the Ericsson RAN Compute platform, within the modernization of the Egyptian telecommunications company’s radio access network. The processor enables artificial intelligence capabilities to run close to coverage sites, rather than relying on processing distant from the transmission site.

According to the announcement, Egypt is among the early markets adopting this solution after its recent commercial launch in Japan. Ericsson provides Vodafone Egypt with radio access network solutions in Greater Cairo and the Delta as part of an ongoing partnership to develop the network.

Artificial intelligence processing inside the network site

The RAN Processor 6672 was designed to support fifth-generation networks and artificial intelligence workloads. Placing this capability inside the network site means that the processing of certain performance-optimization tasks can respond to changes in customer traffic, their gatherings, and their usage patterns as they occur, rather than waiting for periodic adjustments to network settings carried out by engineers.

The announcement does not specify which artificial intelligence tasks Vodafone Egypt will actually deploy, but it links the processor to the network’s ability to direct capacity to areas where usage is higher and improve utilization of the available spectrum.

Greater capacity and lower energy consumption

According to Ericsson, the processor provides four times higher processing capacity compared with the previous generation of Baseband units, while reducing energy consumption by more than 50%. A single RAN processor can also be used instead of three Baseband units, simplifying site components and reducing operational complexity and energy consumption.

In practice, these changes aim to improve coverage efficiency and network performance using the existing spectrum and sites, without the announcement implying the addition of new spectrum or providing independent figures on improvements to the customer experience.

Why does this development matter?

The announcement represents a shift from merely updating network components to introducing artificial intelligence processing capabilities into the radio access layer itself. This is important for telecommunications operators because changes in network demand occur at the site level and continuously, while complete reliance on remote processing or manual configuration may result in a slower response.

Katalin Poliga, Vodafone Egypt’s Vice President of Technology, said that the company is investing in a future-ready network, while Dalia Merab, Head of Ericsson Egypt and Head of Sales, stated that the processor would help meet capacity growth, simplify operations, and improve energy efficiency.

The source does not include details about the number of sites covered, the expansion timeline, or actual measurement results at the customer level. Therefore, the currently announced benefit remains linked to the processor’s specifications and the scope of the initial commercial use, until broader operational data from Vodafone Egypt becomes available.
