Amazon announced on August 19, 2026, that Alexa+ is available on compatible Fire TV devices for all customers in the United States at no additional cost. The update reaches eligible customers automatically, whether or not they are Prime subscribers, without requiring them to download an app or activate a new subscription.
Alexa+ offers a more conversational voice experience than the original version of Alexa, understanding context and follow-up questions and remembering user preferences to provide more relevant answers and recommendations. According to Amazon, customers speak with Alexa+ on Fire TV at nearly twice the rate of their interactions with the original Alexa, and they select the service’s first movie recommendation more than 40% of the time in search queries, compared with the previous version.
Entertainment Search That Does Not Rely Only on a Title
Instead of searching for a specific title, users can naturally describe what they want to watch, such as requesting a highly rated thriller and then narrowing the results with a follow-up question about a newer work or a female-led cast. Amazon says Alexa+ has helped customers quickly access tens of millions of movies, shows, and sports content.
The functions are not limited to finding new content. Users can move what they are watching on Prime Video from one Fire TV device to another in the home using a voice command. They can also ask informational questions related to what appears on the screen and continue the conversation, such as asking how many movies a public figure has appeared in or inquiring about their current activities.
What Changes in Practice for Fire TV Users?
The television becomes an access point for a range of everyday Alexa+ functions, rather than merely an interface for searching for programs. Users can display a live stream from a Ring camera, dim the lights in preparation for watching a movie, or lock a door connected to a smart lock paired with the system. They can also request weather forecasts, recipe suggestions, or game scores, or set timers without using their phone.
Amazon notes that controlling smart home devices through the television has become one of the growing uses of Alexa+ on Fire TV. In practice, this depends on device compatibility and prior connection to the system; therefore, making Alexa+ available does not mean that every smart device will work automatically without proper setup or support.
Devices, Availability, and Subscriptions
The current rollout includes all current-generation Amazon Fire TV Stick devices, Fire TV Cube, and Amazon Ember smart televisions, as well as smart televisions from brands including Hisense and Panasonic when Alexa+ is integrated into them. Amazon said that additional devices and regions may be added over time, but the current announcement identifies the United States as the availability market.
Eligible customers receive a number of Alexa+ functions on the television at no additional cost, including conversational search, voice control of the smart home, and the ability to change Alexa’s personality to suit the user’s style. In contrast, a Prime subscription or Alexa+ Standard Plan subscription provides Alexa+ use on compatible Echo devices, along with additional Fire TV functions such as Alexa Routines, access to specific moments from Ring cameras, and advanced Home Modes features for automating household devices.
Owners of compatible Fire TV devices do not need to take any action to receive the update. Once it arrives, they can use the device as usual and speak to Alexa+ through voice commands.
