Intel presented three architectures that it said target the operation of agentic AI and enterprise workloads across the technology infrastructure, from servers and data centers to laptops and edge platforms. The portfolio includes the Diamond Rapids processor, the Crescent Island graphics processing unit, and the Wildcat Lake system on a chip, which was introduced as part of Intel Core Series 3 processors.

This vision comes at a time when agentic AI applications require a combination of general-purpose processing, specialized acceleration, memory, and data transfer rather than relying on a single component. According to Intel, balancing performance, power consumption, and deployment cost is essential when moving these applications into production.

Diamond Rapids: The Foundation of Enterprise Computing

Diamond Rapids, the next generation of Xeon processors, represents the general-purpose computing and coordination layer for enterprise-level agentic AI workloads. The processor is based on Intel 18A-P technology and combines adaptable compute units, a unified memory fabric, and flexible input/output interfaces.

The specifications Intel presented include up to 256 new cores, a 1.28-gigabyte shared LLC cache, 16 memory channels operating at up to 12,800 MT/s, and 128 lanes of PCIe Gen6 and CXL 3.0. The design also includes Advanced Performance Extensions and enhancements to Advanced Matrix Extensions to accelerate upcoming AI applications.

Crescent Island to Reduce Inference Costs

Crescent Island, a data center graphics processing unit, targets real-time model inference. Intel says the design focuses on increasing the number of tokens produced and improving the economics of operating models, while supporting larger models, longer context windows, and a greater number of concurrent agents in data center environments that use air cooling.

The unit is based on the Xe architecture and includes 32 Xe cores and 256 XMX engines built on Xe3P, with up to 480 gigabytes of LPDDR5X memory. It comes in a 350-watt PCIe card designed for air cooling. The material does not provide comparative performance figures or a commercial availability date.

Wildcat Lake Brings Processing to Edge Devices

Wildcat Lake carries the Intel Core Series 3 processor branding and targets price-sensitive laptops and intelligent edge platforms. The design combines two performance cores and four efficiency cores, integrated Xe3 graphics with XMX acceleration, and an NPU providing up to 17 TOPS for hybrid AI processing.

The processor supports LPDDR5X-7467 memory, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6.0. It also represents the first use of UCIe in an Intel processor, according to the company, enabling multi-chip designs within a single package for widely deployed AI platforms.

Why Does This Matter?

The most important change is not the announcement of a single product, but Intel's attempt to distribute agentic AI functions across different layers: Diamond Rapids for coordination and enterprise computing, Crescent Island for inference, and Wildcat Lake for local and edge processing. This approach relies on Intel 18A, Foveros Direct 3D packaging, and open UCIe chiplet interconnects.

However, the material establishes the presentation of the architectures and their basic specifications more than it establishes the readiness of a complete deployment ecosystem. It does not include independent performance results, pricing, or detailed availability schedules for Diamond Rapids and Crescent Island. Therefore, these designs' ability to improve costs or compete with practical alternatives remains an open question until tests and available products emerge.
