Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9, 2026. The new smartwatch generation focuses on continuous health sensing, alongside AI features that run on the watch and iPhone. The company says the watch delivers the most accurate heart-rate measurement among wearable devices, relying on the new Health Sensing System and S11 chip.
More Frequent Sensing and a New Readiness Indicator
The system includes optical and electrical heart sensors with larger, more efficient green lights, and measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day. Heart-rate variability (HRV) measurement is now available at a frequency of up to 24 times that of the previous generation, with data separated into Recovery HRV for daily recovery and stress indicators, and Overall HRV for a broader view that includes cardiovascular health.
Apple says a scientific study involving more than 1,000 participants from diverse backgrounds compared the watch’s measurement accuracy with competing wearable devices and concluded that Apple Watch recorded the highest accuracy among the devices included in the comparison. This remains a claim made by the company in its launch materials, while the source does not provide details about the methodology, competing devices, or detailed comparison results.
The watch adds the Readiness feature, which analyzes recent activity, training load, biometric data, and sleep score to produce a score from 0 to 10. The score is translated into a recommendation such as recover, adjust the pace, get ready, or push harder, and it updates throughout the day as new data arrives. Apple says the assessment algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study and in collaboration with exercise scientists and physicians within the company.
Battery, Charging, and Step-Tracking Accuracy
The Apple Watch Series 12 maintains up to 24 hours of battery life for daily use and provides up to 10 hours during outdoor workouts, an increase of 25 percent over the previous model. A 15-minute charge also provides up to 12 additional hours of battery life, a 50 percent increase according to Apple.
The step-counter model was redesigned using machine-learning algorithms to improve distance measurement while walking or running indoors, while the S11 chip enables more accurate step counting throughout the day. The watch also adds a new complication for displaying steps directly on the watch face.
AI for Audio and Privacy
Apple introduces the Audio Intelligence suite, which includes Sound Recognition to detect sounds such as sirens, doorbells, and a crying baby; Live Rewind to display a text excerpt from the last 15 seconds of a conversation; Siri Recap to create a brief title and key points from conversations; and Shazam for instant music recognition.
Apple says these features do not create or store audio recordings, and that initial processing takes place inside a hardware-isolated component called Secure Exclave before being immediately deleted. The features also do not identify speakers, and Live Rewind issues an audio alert and displays a visual indicator when activated. Live Rewind and Siri Recap will arrive in beta later in the year, with text excerpts and summaries end-to-end encrypted when synchronized through iCloud.
What Changes in Practice?
Series 12 moves the watch from displaying scattered health indicators to providing a composite daily reading of recovery and capacity for activity, but the value of this reading depends on wearing the watch consistently and on the quality of the data it collects. Audio Intelligence also creates practical uses for people who need audio alerts or want to remember parts of conversations, although Siri Recap’s status as a summary rather than a complete transcript places clear limits on its use as a documentation tool.
The watch comes in 42 mm and 46 mm sizes, with aluminum, titanium, and ceramic options. Aluminum models feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent stronger than the Ion-X glass used in previous models. The price starts at $399 in the United States, preorders began on September 9, and in-store availability will begin on September 18.
watchOS 27 will be available on September 14 for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. It requires an iPhone 11 or later, or the second-generation iPhone SE or later, with iOS 27. Siri AI will initially be released in beta in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in October, while some features vary by language and region.
