Nvidia Accelerates Startup Investments and Nears the Top of AI Funders

A Crunchbase analysis for August reveals that Y Combinator continued to lead investors by number of deals, while Nvidia increased its activity to nine funding rounds, with the total value of rounds it led or co-led reaching $1.3 billion. This points to the growing role of strategic investors directly connected to AI infrastructure alongside traditional venture capital funds.

Nvidia Accelerates Startup Investments and Nears the Top of AI Funders

Y Combinator continued to top the list of the most active investors in U.S. startups during August, but the most notable development in Crunchbase’s data was the clear acceleration in Nvidia’s investment activity. The chip company participated in nine announced funding rounds worth at least $5 million each, marking its strongest month for investment since at least the beginning of 2025, while the total value of rounds it led or co-led reached $1.3 billion.

This activity came during a month in which global venture capital funding rose to $42 billion, an annual increase of 122%, with seven companies receiving rounds worth more than $1 billion each. However, August’s figures reflect not only the return of large deals, but also an important difference between the investor participating in the most deals and the investor associated with the greatest funding value.

Who Topped the Investor Rankings?

General Catalyst ranked first among investors that led or co-led the largest number of rounds, with five rounds worth at least $5 million each. Its largest participation was a $1.1 billion Series A round for River AI, which provides customized tuning for AI models for companies. It also led or co-led a $116 million Series E round for Cityblock Health, along with three seed rounds ranging in value from $10 million to $25 million.

Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and S3 Ventures tied for second place, with four rounds each. The total value of rounds led by Andreessen exceeded $1.15 billion, driven by an $800 million Series C round for defense technology company Castelion and a $300 million Series A round for AI infrastructure company Volta. Sequoia’s four rounds totaled $1.3 billion, including a $1 billion Series B round for nuclear energy company Valar Atomics.

When participation in rounds is counted, whether as a lead or non-lead investor, Y Combinator topped the list with at least 18 qualifying deals. Andreessen Horowitz ranked second with 13 deals, followed by General Catalyst with 10 deals, while Alumni Ventures and Nvidia tied for fourth place with nine deals each.

Why Does Nvidia’s Rise Matter?

Nvidia’s result is particularly significant because its activity is no longer limited to selling chips to startups; it extends to financing companies that may rely on its technologies or operate within the AI ecosystem. Seven of its nine August investments went to companies Crunchbase classified as AI-related, including River AI, Poolside, Groq, Starcloud, and Generalist AI.

The cumulative figures illustrate this shift even more clearly. By mid-August, Nvidia had participated in 59 known funding rounds for startups during 2026, surpassing its total of 53 investments throughout 2025. It also led or co-led at least 11 funding rounds for private companies during the same year. Nvidia is therefore emerging as both a technology supplier and a funder, a position that gives it a broader presence within the AI startup market.

Total Value Does Not Mean Check Size

The investor list changed when ranked according to the total value of rounds they led or co-led. Coatue topped the list after leading Databricks’ $5 billion round, which valued the data and AI company at $190 billion. JPMorganChase and Valor Equity Partners followed, with $2.37 billion each, after being listed as lead investors in a $1.37 billion Series D round for defense technology manufacturing company Hadrian and a $1 billion Series D round for home battery company Base Power.

The total value of rounds Nvidia led or co-led was $1.3 billion, approximately the same figure as Sequoia’s. Nvidia’s total included Poolside’s $1 billion round and Volta’s $300 million round. General Catalyst also exceeded the $1 billion threshold, with a total of approximately $1.26 billion, while Andreessen Horowitz’s total reached about $1.15 billion.

However, Crunchbase cautions that these figures estimate deal values rather than representing the capital paid by each investor exclusively. Investors rarely disclose the value of each party’s contribution, even though the lead investor typically provides a substantial share of the funding.

What Do the Early-Stage Data Reveal?

In seed deals, Y Combinator maintained its lead by supporting at least 12 U.S.-based companies during August. Orbital Edge Accelerator ranked second with eight seed investments, all announced as part of the same August batch. It was followed by NMotion and Techstars with six deals each, then SV Angel 1 with five deals.

This list requires greater caution because small funding rounds, particularly at the seed stage, are typically delayed in being announced or added to databases. The rankings may therefore change as new disclosures arrive.

Editorial Takeaway

The most important conclusion from the August data is that the startup funding market operates according to two different measures: the number of deals, where Y Combinator remains a frequent player through follow-on rounds, and deal value, where a single massive round can completely change the investor rankings. Nvidia’s rise adds a strategic dimension; companies with a direct interest in the expansion of AI are becoming influential funders alongside traditional funds.

However, the data alone do not establish the extent of Nvidia’s influence within each company or the returns it generates from these investments. The analysis also focuses on announced investments in U.S.-based companies and relies on data pulled on September 10, 2026, meaning that reporting delays may affect the rankings, particularly at the seed stage.
