The UN System Data Commons, an open-source platform, has been launched by the United Nations system to bring together statistics issued by its various entities in a single resource that can be searched and analyzed. The platform is based on Data Commons, developed by Google, and transforms scattered data into an interconnected knowledge graph that can be used by artificial intelligence-powered tools and systems.
The platform addresses a practical problem faced by researchers and analysts: statistics related to health, poverty, education, energy, and other areas were distributed among multiple organizations and presented in mismatched formats, structures, and geographic boundaries. According to the published article, collecting and linking these figures required months of manual work before the actual analysis could begin.
Linking Indicators and Data in One Environment
The platform integrates measures, time series, and geographic boundaries within an interconnected environment, allowing users to examine the relationship between more than one dataset rather than treating each source in isolation. Google says this approach gives data analysts more time to look for trends and build evidence-based solutions instead of formatting and realigning spreadsheets.
The project receives support from Google.org to the UN Foundation. Based on open standards such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP), agents can access reliable figures from the platform, connect data from different fields, and then prepare charts, graphs, or initial written materials. However, Google warns that original sources should be reviewed before citing important figures, even when the data used are documented and verified.

The fundamental change is not merely the addition of a new search interface, but an attempt to create a shared layer above statistics that previously operated in separate silos. This could reduce the cost of accessing data for researchers, journalists, and program managers and make comparisons between indicators more direct. The use of intelligent assistants also does not eliminate the need for human review.
