The popular fitness platform "Strava" has announced the rollout of a set of new updates focusing on improving the route search experience and map usage, alongside revealing additional upcoming features including audio navigation.
In a subsequent update, the company confirmed that all features launched today, as well as the features announced under the "coming soon" category, are exclusively dedicated to paid subscribers only.
What changed in the Strava update?
The new update includes several fundamental improvements, most notably:
- Natural Language Search: Instead of relying on specific keywords in the maps tab, users can now describe what they are looking for in simple, natural language, such as "cycling route near a lake."
- Improved Route Cards: Route cards now display real photos and activity data derived from other users to help athletes know route details in advance.
- Offline Mode Improvements: Enabling users to place saved maps directly on the home screen to continue navigation, while ensuring that workout data continues to be recorded locally and uploaded automatically when the signal returns.
Features coming soon
The company also revealed additional features under development, which include route details supported by community data to learn information such as wildlife sightings, and the ability to view maps via the web for a broader view.
The most prominent anticipated addition is the turn-by-turn audio navigation feature, which allows for voice guidance for walking and running specific routes without the need to look at the screen.
Why does this news matter?
This update represents an advanced step for the Strava app in enhancing the outdoor exploration experience and supporting safety and navigation without the need for constant reliance on an internet connection, although those advanced features are limited to the paid subscriber segment according to the company's official clarification.
