YouTube Plans to Adopt AV2 Video Coding by Early 2027

The YouTube platform has announced its plans to begin rolling out the advanced AV2 video codec across its platform in early 2027, with the initial launch dedicated to the platform's web version, amid expectations of providing enhanced streaming experiences and reducing buffering rates.

This announcement comes following the Alliance for Open Media's release of the final specifications for the AV2 codec earlier in 2026. Technical estimates indicate that this codec possesses efficiency exceeding the AV1 codec by a range of 25% to 32%, which allows users to obtain ultra-high-quality streaming at the same current bitrate, or comparable quality at a lower bitrate, directly contributing to reducing bandwidth consumption.

Deployment Plan Details and Official Statements

Dice Ken, Engineering Director at YouTube, explained that the platform strongly supports open codecs that ensure the best video quality with minimal playback interruptions. He noted that as of March 2026, more than 90% of YouTube's library has become available in AV1 format based on watch time, emphasizing the team's eagerness to begin streaming in AV2 format to provide superior quality and new possibilities for multi-streaming.

For his part, Jim Pankowski, Vice President of Engineering at Chrome, hinted that the adoption of this codec will open the door to advanced experiences across browsers, including improving multi-view video watching experiences as well as supporting higher resolution and more efficient video conferencing.

Why This News Matters and What Are the Limitations?

This development represents a significant technical step toward reducing data consumption without sacrificing display quality on massive streaming platforms. However, the widespread adoption of the AV2 codec faces challenges related to hardware and software support; as these technologies require a long time to reach various devices and media, citing the experience of AV1, which was launched in 2018 and the first smartphones supporting its encoding only recently appeared with the Pixel 10 series.
