Google Health 5.11 Rolls Out Advanced Activity and Health Tracking Features

Google has begun rolling out version 5.11 of its health application (Google Health) this week, marking a major update that serves Fitbit fitness trackers, Pixel Watches, and other supported devices. The update brings a wide range of improvements, including automatic activity tracking, new health features for subscribers, and faster integration with continuous glucose monitors.

Enhanced Automatic Activity Tracking

Enhanced automatic activity tracking is currently available for Fitbit Air devices as well as Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5, with the Fitbit Edge scheduled to receive these capabilities upon its release on October 27. This system offers the following features:

  • Support for More Activities: The range of activities that the tracker or watch can detect has been expanded from 10 activities to approximately 100, including strength training, swimming, team sports, and squash.
  • Contextual Awareness: Thanks to contextual reasoning, the system takes into account exercise routines, historical data, and manual adjustments to achieve nearly double the detection accuracy and reduce missed workouts by more than half.
  • Automatic Recording: Workouts that meet the minimum duration threshold (15 minutes by default) with a sustained high heart rate are recorded automatically, with a summary typically sent to the Google Health app within 30 minutes.
  • Continuous Learning: Manual activity confirmations and adjustments help improve the algorithm, which learns the user's unique patterns and uses them to refine future predictions.

Health Guardian Features for Subscribers

Fitbit Air and Edge users with a Google Health Premium subscription receive two new Health Guardian features that allow them to set up blood pressure and insulin resistance trends, with the first report to be issued at the beginning of November. Blood pressure trends allow tracking patterns before cardiac strain for those who wear Fitbit Air devices for 5 consecutive days or more in October, while insulin resistance trends track monthly shifts in metabolic health for those who have worn their watches for 7 days and nights or more during the same month.

What Changes Practically for Users?

The update includes renaming blood glucose measurements to simply "Glucose" across various sections of the app with updated charts. It also enables users to set custom target ranges for continuous glucose data by navigating to the metabolic section in the health tab. For users in the United States, those who link Abbott's Lingo platform directly to the Google Health app can benefit from faster synchronization that displays glucose data within 30 minutes of a reading, along with the ability to receive answers from the Google Health Coach assistant regarding glucose trends for premium subscribers.

Version 5.11 also includes comprehensive sleep tracking improvements, featuring greater accuracy in wake-up detection by integrating step data to precisely track brief awakenings such as going to the restroom, in addition to making it easier to edit and delete naps directly from the nap card if they do not match reality. The update is currently available for iOS while rolling out continuously to Android users.
