Instagram's Expansion into Long-Form Content
Instagram has announced the launch of a new feature called "Features," a strategic move aimed at entering the long-form and horizontal video market directly. This direction comes as an attempt by the platform to strengthen its ability to compete with YouTube, as Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, and Tessa Lyons, Vice President, seek to provide more space for content creators to present more in-depth stories.
The core idea of the new feature relies on integration with short "Reels" clips, where content creators can use short clips as a tool to attract audiences and direct them toward the long-form videos available via "Features." Mosseri noted that this trend came in response to changing usage patterns, as users are increasingly inclined to watch videos with friends, including via smart TV applications.
What Does This Mean for Content Creators?
Despite the technical ambition of this move, the absence of a clear ad revenue-sharing system raises fundamental questions for content creators. While YouTube provides an established financial model that allows creators to earn direct income from long-form video ads, Instagram still lacks a similar program, merely pointing to the continuation of "existing ad agreements."
Tessa Lyons stated that Instagram sees an opportunity to help content creators who do not currently possess the necessary commercial infrastructure, but she did not provide any details regarding future plans to directly compensate creators financially for long-form videos, which led many users to express their concerns in initial comments regarding the feasibility of moving to this platform compared to competitors.
Launch Restrictions
This trial is currently limited to the US market only, as it is not even possible to watch the promotional video for the feature from outside the United States. The company confirms that this phase is still in its early stages and that it is working on testing the feature and gathering user feedback before making any decisions regarding global expansion or developing monetization models.
