Meta has quietly launched a new application based on artificial intelligence technologies called Style Sketch, a tool designed to help users coordinate their clothes and choose outfits using pieces they already own in their real-life closets. This application comes as part of the company's new trend toward launching small, specialized AI-based applications to enhance the user experience.
How does the Style Sketch app work?
The application relies primarily on integration with the Instagram platform, building a virtual wardrobe through photos that the user has previously shared on the platform. In addition, the application provides options to add clothing items manually by:
- Taking instant photos of clothing items.
- Recording short videos of the clothes.
- Uploading photos directly from the phone's camera roll.
Once the digital wardrobe is built, the application offers suggestions for coordinating outfits based on the user's personal style. The most prominent feature is the ability to "try on" these outfits virtually on a realistic model that is customized to match the user's body shape and skin tone, providing an accurate visualization of how the clothes will look before wearing them.
Smart features for planning and travel
The role of the application is not limited to daily coordination but extends to travel planning; the user can enter the travel destination, duration of stay, and planned activities, and the application will create a daily schedule of suggested outfits while taking into account weather forecasts and the planned trip itinerary. The application also allows users to select a specific clothing item and request suggestions for new outfits centered around that specific piece.
What changes practically for users?
Style Sketch represents an attempt by Meta to leverage the massive visual data on Instagram to turn it into daily utility value. While there are competing applications in the market such as Alta or photo organization tools in Google Photos, Meta has a competitive advantage in that users already have a visual record of their personal style on its platforms, making the process of building a digital wardrobe easier and smoother.
Strategically, this launch reflects a shift in Meta's internal policy; Mark Zuckerberg previously indicated the company's intention to launch a larger number of applications thanks to the efficiency of AI tools that have made the development process faster and less expensive. This application joins a series of recent launches such as the Waddle World app and the Vibes app.
Availability and access
The Style Sketch application is currently available in select markets including Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand on both iOS and Android operating systems. Meta has not yet announced a date for the application's availability in other regions or its plans for global expansion, as the company appears to be following a pilot launch strategy in specific markets before a wider rollout.
