Reddit Moves Toward Exclusive Login Amid Search Traffic Decline Caused by AI

Reddit is preparing for a radical shift in how its platform is used, intending soon to restrict content browsing exclusively to logged-in users, thereby preventing non-registered visitors or those without accounts from viewing posts and communities. This strategic change, according to statements by CEO Steve Huffman in a letter to shareholders, comes in light of a noticeable decline in traffic from search engines as a result of the rise of artificial intelligence technologies and features.

Huffman explained that transitioning to an entirely login-dependent experience is an essential step to retain new audiences, ensure users get the best possible experience within the platform, and enable them to directly access content and communities most relevant to their interests. The company is scheduled to initially test this change in select markets outside the United States, ahead of a wider rollout later.

Reasons for the Shift, Advertising Impacts, and Data Protection

Alongside countering changes in internet user behavior and combating data scraping through AI tools, the company noted that this change serves clear commercial and regulatory goals. Adopting an exclusive login model enables more accurate and richer signals to target advertising, as well as raising the overall level of user engagement within the platform.

This decision also helps protect Reddit's data-rich content and assists the platform in better adapting to growing global regulations, such as age verification laws being gradually imposed in several markets. However, the company has not yet specified the exact timing when unregistered visitors will face a strict login prompt window, noting that it is considering providing a minimal capability for temporary browsing of shared links coming from search results before the mandatory login window appears.

Impact of AI on Search Traffic and the Relationship with Google

Huffman highlighted the ongoing crisis of declining traffic from search engines, pointing out that AI-powered answer features in Google's search engine no longer drive traffic to external platforms the way they used to. Reddit recorded a drop in referrals from search engines by more than one million visits per week during October alone.

Regarding the controversial licensing agreement between Reddit and Google worth about $60 million annually for training artificial intelligence models, Huffman indicated that ongoing discussions are taking place to re-evaluate this partnership, emphasizing that any future agreement must achieve a fair value exchange and align with the company's long-term strategy.

Upcoming Product Features and Changes

In addition to enforcing login requirements, Reddit is considering introducing new features to enhance engagement, most notably better organization of the platform's main feeds to make them more consistent and less random. Huffman also revealed the possibility of developing a private browsing mode, known as Incognito Mode, aimed at dealing with the segment of users who repeatedly delete and reinstall the app.
