Apple has officially released the tvOS 27.2 operating system update for Apple TV, which is the first major update since the release of version 27 last September, as the company skipped the 27.1 release. Unlike iOS, Apple does not usually release detailed release notes for tvOS updates, but an official support document clarified the details of the new changes.
The new update includes several prominent additions focusing on improving the daily user experience, ranging from screensaver options to the integration of communication features and home device management.
Diverse Screensaver and FaceTime Improvements
Apple TV features distinctive screensavers, and the tvOS 27.2 update has added a new shuffle option known as Shuffle, which automatically switches between Aerials, Memories, Portraits, and Snoopy categories every time the device enters screensaver mode. Users can now also choose specific photos from an iPhone to display without having to share the entire photo library, maintaining privacy when sharing the device with family members.
In terms of communications, the FaceTime feature has received improvements including easier joining via direct links, while continuing to rely on the iPhone as a webcam via the Continuity Camera feature. The update also now supports integrating third-party sign language interpreters and live simultaneous translation services.
Find My App Updates and User Profiles
The Siri Remote now appears clearly within the Find My app, eliminating the need to open the control app via the iPhone Control Center to locate it, although the built-in speaker feature requires the newer model.
The update also added American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL) support for specific movies and shows via the Apple TV app, alongside syncing updated user profile support with iPhone and iPad devices, and adding new characters to the profile selection screen.
Availability and System Requirements
The update is available for free via system settings for the second-generation Apple TV 4K (released in 2021) and later. However, some advanced features, such as setting up a spatial audio system using pairs of HomePod mini 2 or HomePod 2nd generation speakers, remain exclusive to the new Apple TV 4K model equipped with the A19 chip.
