A Move Toward Personalizing the Customer Experience
Starbucks has announced its plans to explore AI technologies with the aim of improving the customer experience in drive-thru lanes. During the recent earnings call, the company's CEO, Brian Niccol, stated that the company aims to develop experiences capable of recognizing participating customers upon their arrival, allowing for the display of personalized digital menus and facilitating payment processes.
Competition in Restaurant Automation
This step comes within the framework of a technical race witnessed by major restaurant chains; companies such as Taco Bell and McDonald's are adopting similar technologies. McDonald's is currently working on testing the "ArchIQ" system, which relies on AI to recognize repeat customers and suggest their usual orders, while Taco Bell is exploring changing the content of digital boards based on each individual car.
Developing Internal Operations
In addition to personalized menus, Starbucks revealed its intention to begin testing backend AI models in drive-thru lanes by 2027. These models aim to assist employees (baristas) in entering orders with higher accuracy and efficiency. The company also plans to integrate AI into search and discovery features within its official app, with the possibility of making smart chat ordering options available in the future.
What Does This Mean for Users?
Although these technologies are still in their early stages, the trend indicates a radical shift in how customers interact with brands. For the user, this may mean a faster and more convenient ordering experience, where personal preferences are automatically recalled. However, details regarding data privacy and how customers are recognized remain open questions that will become clearer as the company expands the scope of its testing and evaluates what achieves tangible results.
It is worth noting that Starbucks is no stranger to these technologies; it has already begun allowing customers to place orders via ChatGPT, and has also launched the "Green Dot Assist" tool, which supports employees in answering their inquiries related to recipes and service standards.
