Microsoft announced on July 22, 2026, a $60 million investment to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Mission Genesis, an initiative aimed at accelerating the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research and doubling the productivity and impact of American research and innovation within a decade. The commitment includes launching a new coordination center and program office called SPARK to facilitate collaboration among Microsoft, the Department of Energy, national laboratories, and academic institutions.
Mission Genesis brings together the Department of Energy’s 17 national laboratories, experimental facilities, accumulated scientific data, and next-generation computing capabilities on a unified platform. Microsoft says the goal is to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the scientific process, helping researchers move more quickly from hypothesis to discovery while maintaining requirements for security, reproducibility, and governance.
Investment Details
Microsoft’s investment will be distributed across two main tracks over three years:
- $40 million: Azure computing and AI service credits to support large-scale scientific workloads, including training, simulation, and iteration.
- $20 million: Engineering enablement services for solutions, including architecture, deployment, adoption, and acceleration, with the aim of turning cloud and AI resources into operational scientific outcomes.
According to Microsoft, the investment structure reflects the belief that infrastructure alone is insufficient to achieve sustainable scientific impact, and that human expertise and disciplined execution are essential for transforming technical capabilities into discoveries.
SPARK as the Coordination Gateway to Genesis
SPARK presents itself as the unified entry point for Microsoft’s collaboration with Mission Genesis. The center brings together program, technology, research, engineering, security, compliance, partner, and field teams within a single pathway that begins with the initial idea and continues through the deployment of scientific solutions.
The program includes a dedicated office for managing Mission Genesis, responsible for receiving and prioritizing initiatives, along with a workflow cadence based on stages and periodic reviews, and an operational interface with the Department of Energy for coordination and reporting. It also includes a center of excellence for AI in science that moves use cases from the conceptual stage to secure, compliant, and scalable applications, with support sessions, training events, and workshops focused on responsible AI and research reproducibility.
SPARK’s responsibilities also include improving the allocation of Azure credits to projects most capable of accelerating discoveries, managing specialized technical services to help laboratories adopt and operate AI capabilities, and developing joint research on challenges aligned with Mission Genesis, according to timelines, publications, and intellectual property rights governed by terms agreed upon by both parties.
Azure, Microsoft Discovery, and Quantum Tools
The collaboration will rely on Microsoft’s secure, FedRAMP-authorized cloud and AI portfolio, including Azure, Microsoft Foundry, and Zero Trust technologies through Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Sentinel, and Microsoft Entra. These capabilities are intended to expand the Department of Energy’s American Science Cloud by providing services for computing, AI, data, and collaboration.
Microsoft will also provide Department of Energy and national laboratory teams with access to the generally available Microsoft Discovery platform, which brings together intelligent models, simulations, data, and experimental workflows in a governed environment. Its capabilities include autonomous laboratory orchestration, integration of Microsoft Research models for science, continuous learning within the scientific loop, agent memory, and improved organization, indexing, and integration of institutional science data.
Participants will also receive early access to the local desktop Microsoft Discovery application. Microsoft connects the initiative to its progress in quantum computing, including developments based on Majorana and more reliable topological qubits, while pointing to future possibilities for modeling complex materials, chemistry, energy systems, and national security challenges.
Initial Projects Underway
Microsoft said that work has already begun with federal researchers and universities and includes four initial projects: accelerating the discovery of energy-storage materials and the design of biological systems at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; supporting biosecurity through AI and bioinformatics at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; developing autonomous laboratories for materials discovery at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory using MatterGen and MatterSim; and using AI to streamline licensing and reviews for nuclear energy projects, alongside remote operation of generating stations, at Idaho National Laboratory.
Microsoft believes that combining AI, quantum computing, and hyperscale infrastructure can support fields including energy, chemistry, materials science, and biosecurity. The company affirmed its readiness to deepen its partnership with government and academia within the framework of Mission Genesis.
