Apple has announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a clear focus on four key areas: photography, sustained performance, battery life, and artificial intelligence. Both phones feature a 48-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture for the first time on an iPhone, along with the A20 Pro chip, a new cooling system, and iOS 27.
Pre-orders begin on Saturday, September 12, 2026, while availability starts on Friday, September 18, in more than 65 countries and regions, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, India, and Japan. The two phones will reach 20 additional countries and regions on September 25.
Variable-Aperture Camera and Expanded Manual Controls
The new main camera uses six laser-cut blades that move between aperture settings through a rotating mechanism, allowing the phone to adjust depth of field and exposure automatically. Apple says the new sensor improves low-light photography and increases detail clarity, particularly in group photos.
Users can manually select any of the four aperture settings from the Camera app, while Apple also provides an application programming interface for developers to control the aperture range within their apps. The Pro controls interface adds shortcuts and manual control over aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, along with a histogram for monitoring exposure levels.
Other improvements include new tools for controlling texture and grain within Photographic Styles, as well as the ability to apply Cinematic effects after recording to video at up to 60 frames per second. Time-lapse mode also supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR recording, while Audio Mix receives new algorithms to improve voice clarity and isolate music.
Feature for Verifying Image Authenticity
Apple is introducing the Apple Reference Image feature to create a non-editable reference copy of an image. When Reference mode is used, the sensor captures signed data for each pixel, then Private Cloud Compute processes it to create a copy that can be displayed next to the original image in the Photos app, enabling visual comparison and the detection of edits.
Application programming interfaces will be available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, enabling third-party apps to display these reference images. Apple says image metadata and support for the forthcoming SynthID standard may also help identify images created or modified by artificial intelligence.
A20 Pro and Cooling Designed for Sustained Performance
The new series is powered by the A20 Pro chip manufactured using a 2-nanometer process. According to Apple’s figures, the chip provides 50% greater memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, a six-core CPU, and a seven-core GPU that is up to 40% faster than the previous generation.
The chip also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine, for a total of 32 cores for artificial intelligence processing, and uses integrated neural processors to accelerate on-device models and computational photography. Both phones also include the N1 wireless networking chip, with support for Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while the C2 modem provides higher upload speeds and 15% lower power consumption than the C1X, with mmWave support in the United States.
To manage heat, Apple redesigned the vapor chamber using new materials and a heat-dissipation area three times larger than that of the iPhone 17 Pro. The company says this increases sustained performance by up to 40% compared with the previous generation, but this percentage remains a figure stated by Apple and was not supported in the article by independent testing.
Battery, Siri AI, and Availability
Video playback reaches up to 36 hours on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the iPhone 18 Pro Max in models that operate exclusively through eSIM. The iPhone 18 Pro can be charged to 50% in approximately 15 minutes using a wired connection or 30 minutes wirelessly, while charging the iPhone 18 Pro Max for five minutes provides about seven hours of video playback, according to Apple.
Both phones come with iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, in addition to Siri AI, which will be available in beta beginning September 14 in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in October. The features rely on understanding personal context, awareness of on-screen content, on-device processing, and Private Cloud Compute, but their availability will vary according to language, region, and local laws.
What changes in practice? The Pro update is not limited to increased performance; the variable aperture brings the phone closer to traditional cameras in terms of control, while Apple is targeting photographers and journalists with a reference feature for image authenticity.
