On September 14, 2026, Apple began making the public versions of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 available, alongside macOS 27, which is named Golden Gate, following months of beta testing. The most significant change in these releases centers on the new Siri AI assistant, but its availability does not match that of the operating systems themselves in terms of devices, languages, or markets.
Siri Moves Toward Understanding User Context
Siri AI represents a major redesign of the voice assistant. It can use personal information found in different apps and understand what is displayed on the device’s screen to provide contextually relevant answers. Apple has also added a standalone Siri app that keeps an archive of previous conversations and can perform actions within apps such as Messages and Reminders, as well as search personal content such as photos and email.
The feature begins as a beta on supported devices in English. Apple plans to add French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish during October, while there is currently no announced date for Arabic support.
Uneven Availability Across Markets and Devices
Siri AI and the features that rely on it will not be available in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS within the European Union at launch, while the feature remains suspended in China because of regulatory requirements there. Apple says it is working on a path that balances making the features available with maintaining privacy and security.
iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and later, in addition to the second- and third-generation iPhone SE, but Siri AI requires a device that supports Apple Intelligence. Eligible devices include the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 series and later. On iPad devices, the assistant is available on the iPad mini equipped with the A17 Pro chip and on devices using the M1 chip or later. It is also available on Macs equipped with Apple Silicon processors, starting with the M1.
Key iOS and macOS Changes
iOS 27 receives changes to the Liquid Glass design, including a slider for controlling interface transparency, along with updated icons, large interface elements, and separate settings for the volume levels of ringtones, alarms, timers, alerts, and system sounds. Apple is adding AI-powered photo-editing tools, custom equalizer settings for AirPods, parental-control improvements, and the ability to use the same phone number on two iPhones.
Apple says some app-launch scenarios may become up to 30% faster. In macOS 27 Golden Gate, Liquid Glass improvements extend to windows, contrast, and light refractions, alongside enhanced searching through personal data and performing actions within apps. However, the system no longer supports Macs with Intel processors, making macOS Tahoe their final major update.
What Changes in Practice?
The release provides a broad update to Apple’s operating systems, but it does not mean that all users will receive a unified experience. Support depends on the device model, language, and region, while Siri AI remains the most restricted element in the initial phase. Updates may also take longer to appear because of the expected strain on Apple’s servers. iPhone users can check for the update by going to Settings, then General, and Software Update, while ensuring that sufficient storage space is available before installation.
