Convatec Accelerates Medical Device Launches and Plans to Increase Research and Development Investments

Convatec is moving into a new phase of growth after completing a transformation program that lasted several years. The company plans to accelerate medical device launches and increase spending on research and development and manufacturing capacity during 2026 and 2027, according to CEO Jonny Mason in an interview with MedTech Dive.

The company, which focuses on infusion care, wound care, ostomy care and continence, is targeting sales growth of between 6% and 8% next year. Mason says the four categories will grow at a faster pace than this year, supported by new product launches in each category.

From Transformation to Investment in Growth

Mason became CEO in October, having been chief financial officer since joining Convatec in 2022. He succeeded Karim Bitar, who led the transformation strategy since 2019 and died suddenly in the previous October while on sick leave. The strategy included focusing on the company’s areas of strength, doubling research and development investments, and increasing capital spending to rebuild factories.

According to Mason, the transformation was completed last year, prompting management to raise its level of ambition. Convatec says it launched eight new products between 2022 and 2025 and plans to launch eight more products during 2026 and 2027. Last year, it also announced plans to invest $1 billion over a decade in research and development facilities in Manchester and Boston, with its research activity approximately divided between the United States and the United Kingdom.

Infusion Is a Key Area of Expansion

Mason sees infusion care as Convatec’s fastest-growing business, driven by the expansion of pump therapy among patients with diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. The company expects double-digit growth in this business starting next year and describes itself as the world’s largest manufacturer of infusion sets.

The company says infusion sets intended for Parkinson’s treatments will expand with the entry of therapies from Supernus and Mitsubishi Tanabe, in addition to its exclusive supply of infusion sets for a treatment from AbbVie. Convatec is also working on sets with greater volume and thickness that could eventually support the use of pump therapy in chemotherapy and pain management.

New Products and a Regulatory Observation

In the United States, the company launched Cure Aqua on September 28, an intermittent catheter made from a hydrophilic polymer that becomes low-friction when water is used. The product targets the economy segment of the catheter market.

At the same time, the company continues to work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to address observations included in a warning letter concerning infusion sets manufactured by its subsidiary Unomedical. Mason says the observations concern management of the complaint process, not product quality or patient safety, and that they have not affected sales or production. The company estimates that it may complete the remediation by the end of 2027, while acknowledging that regulatory procedures take time.

What Is Changing in Practice?

The plan reveals Convatec’s shift from repairing operational performance to expanding its portfolio in specialized therapeutic markets, particularly pump therapy. However, the announced volume of launches alone does not establish the products’ commercial success; the company’s ability to execute the expansion, increase manufacturing capacity and close the regulatory observations will remain decisive factors in converting research and development investments into actual growth.
