TikTok announced the launch of an artificial intelligence-powered shopping assistant, alongside a new checkout feature that allows users to purchase products directly from brands within the For You feed, rather than leaving the app to complete the transaction.
An Assistant That Understands Shopping Context
TikTok describes its Shopping Assistant tool as a conversational agent that helps users discover and purchase products. The company says the assistant can understand the context of a conversation and remember users’ preferences and needs during the interaction, then provide instant guidance related to product details, shipping information, sizes, availability, and assistance with completing the purchase.
The new checkout feature allows users to purchase directly from a brand with one click from videos appearing in the For You feed, the main feed that relies on TikTok’s algorithms to recommend content.
From Discovery to Transaction
TikTok is thus combining a tool that answers product-related questions with a direct in-app payment path. In practice, the platform is not limited to encouraging users to discover a product through a short video; it is attempting to keep the inquiry, decision, and purchase within the same journey.
This approach differs from relying exclusively on TikTok Shop, TikTok’s internal marketplace that has been the main driver of its e-commerce ambitions. The new tools are integrated into broader parts of the app, including the For You feed, rather than confining purchases to the dedicated storefront interface.
Payment and Commerce Partnerships
TikTok says the new features are being developed in partnership with commerce platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe, in addition to other unnamed parties.
This integration could give TikTok greater access to multiple stages of the shopping journey and a larger share of transaction value. It also places the in-app assistant in practical competition with external artificial intelligence tools that users may turn to for answers about products, such as ChatGPT.
Why Does This Expansion Matter?
The move comes at a time when TikTok’s influence on purchasing decisions is growing. According to the company’s economic impact report, released last week, activity on the platform contributed to generating $81 billion in gross domestic product for U.S. businesses, while 54 million Americans said they had purchased a product after seeing it in a video on TikTok.
TikTok Shop launched in the United States in September 2023. Market research firm eMarketer estimates that its U.S. sales reached approximately $15.8 billion during 2025, representing nearly 18% of the country’s total social commerce.
The actual shift here is the expansion of commerce within the content feed itself, rather than merely adding a new interface to the store. However, the material does not clarify the launch’s scope, the markets where the features are available, or how the assistant handles the accuracy of availability, sizing, and shipping information. It also provides no details about transaction fees or mechanisms for protecting user preference data—points that will practically determine the feature’s impact on shoppers and sellers.
