Versatility of Options on the CLAR Platform
BMW continues its flexible vehicle manufacturing strategy via the CLAR platform, announcing the new generation of its X5 sports activity vehicle for 2027. The company offers diverse options including mild-hybrid internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, and the fully electric iX5, with future plans to include hydrogen fuel cell options.
Technical Innovation in the iX5
The electric iX5 version relies on the sixth generation of BMW electric motors, utilizing an asynchronous motor on the front axle and an electrically excited synchronous motor in the rear, which reduces energy loss compared to permanent magnet motors. This system produces a total output of 570 horsepower (425 kW) and 804 Nm of torque.
The vehicle comes equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 144 kWh (usable), based on new cylindrical cells with a height of 120 mm, which increases energy density by 30% compared to previous models and provides a range of up to 450 miles (approximately 724 km) according to EPA standards.
Charging System and Artificial Intelligence
The iX5 features exceptional charging capabilities thanks to its 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing it to go from 10% to 80% battery capacity in just 22 minutes when using a 460 kW charger. The company has also integrated an advanced artificial intelligence system for route management, where the system analyzes charging station data, reliability, and locations to automatically select the best stops.
What Changes Practically for Users?
- Panoramic Vision Display: BMW has replaced the traditional instrument cluster with the Panoramic Vision screen integrated into the base of the windshield, enhancing driver focus on the road.
- Heart of Joy System: This is a powerful central electronic control unit that manages vehicle dynamics, enabling smoother driving control, including automatic stopping when using a single pedal.
- Proactive Safety Features: The vehicle includes an intelligent system for detecting stop signs and red lights, which alerts the driver or automatically activates the brakes when necessary as part of the "Symbiotic Drive" package.
The price for the X5 40 xDrive model starts at $72,100, while the price for the electric iX5 60 xDrive version starts at $79,800, with arrival in showrooms scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
