A First Look at the iX7
BMW is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio by developing the iX7 model, which will be the first fully electric SUV to offer three rows of seats. Camouflaged prototypes of the car have been spotted undergoing performance testing at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany, revealing the exterior design features of the luxury vehicle.
Design and Technologies
Leaked images indicate that the iX7 will adopt a more traditional design language compared to other Neue Klasse models such as the iX3. The car features a wide and massive front grille, with a split headlight design similar to the traditional X7 model, rather than the wide headlights adopted in the Neue Klasse platform. The company has also abandoned traditional door handles in favor of flush handles integrated into the vehicle's pillars.
Expected Performance
The iX7 is expected to rely on a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, leveraging the technologies used in the iX5 60 xDrive model. This system is expected to deliver strong performance, as the powertrain in the iX5 generates up to 578 horsepower (425 kW) with 593 lb-ft of torque, allowing acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
What Changes Practically?
The vehicle relies on a 144 kWh battery pack, giving it an estimated driving range of up to 435 miles. The car also supports an 800-volt electrical system to enhance charging speeds. Recent tests have shown this platform's ability to reach a peak charging rate of 464 kW, allowing for an added 170 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.
Production and Availability
BMW plans to begin actual production of the iX7 at its plant in Spartanburg, United States, by late 2027, joining the new iX5 production line, with expectations that further official technical details will be revealed as the launch date approaches in mid-2027.
