General Motors renews commitment to electric vehicles and autonomous driving through smart OnStar technologies and LMR batteries

Amid current challenges facing the electric vehicle sector in the United States, General Motors has reaffirmed its strategic commitment to electrification, autonomous driving, and vehicle quality improvement while shortening its development cycle. These announcements came during the company's annual GM Forward event, where executives unveiled a package of new technologies and innovations.

The most prominent announcement was the future expansion of the advanced hands-free and eyes-free Super Cruise driving technology to encompass nearly the company's entire vehicle lineup, including transport trucks and crossover vehicles, thus moving beyond luxury models such as the Escalade IQ. Sterling Anderson, Chief Product Officer at General Motors, explained that the company is intensively testing this technology at a rate of one million miles per month in both real-world and virtual environments.

Smart OnStar Assistant and Task Management

General Motors' future vision relies on integrating a new smart assistant known as OnStar AI. This assistant's role is not limited to learning the driver's habits, but extends to helping them better understand and use complex vehicle features through direct commands and inquiries regarding alerts and notifications.

Thanks to new local on-board computing capabilities, systems will be able to process data locally without the constant need for cloud connectivity, while utilizing connectivity when available to enhance safety and anticipate road conditions based on data from other vehicles.

The Key to Trust and Data Privacy

General Motors officials acknowledged that the success of this ecosystem fundamentally depends on consumer trust, especially with the provision of advanced features such as interior cameras that function as dash cams. To strengthen this trust, the company emphasized that video clips stored in the cloud will be end-to-end encrypted, preventing the company itself or security agencies from reading or decrypting that data.

Level 4 Autonomous Driving and Battery Technology

Regarding Level 4 fully autonomous driving, Rashed Haq, Vice President of Autonomous Vehicles at the company, explained that development efforts focus on two main pillars: comprehensive safety and roadcraft to ensure traffic flow is not hindered. The company and software systems also assume full responsibility in the event of any technical malfunction during automated driving.

On the engineering front, General Motors announced its fourth-generation electric vehicle architecture based on Lithium-rich Manganese-rich (LMR) battery technology. This new chemistry promises energy density close to Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt batteries but at a lower cost free of expensive cobalt, bringing its cost close to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells and helping to reduce battery costs by up to 30 percent.
