Nintendo Switch 2 Jailbreak Opens the Door for Third-Party Applications

The Nintendo Switch 2 has experienced an early technical breach shortly after its launch, as security researchers managed to jailbreak the system, opening the way for running unofficial software on the platform. This development comes after security researcher Sammy Hajhamid, known as pepsipu, released the first software exploit for the device last week.

Running YouTube and Bypassing System Restrictions

Despite the absence of an official YouTube application on the Switch 2 platform, a user on the X platform (known as @byizmysh) succeeded in running the service on the device using the open-source VacuumTube project, which relies on the YouTube interface designed for television devices. This achievement demonstrates the ability to bypass the software restrictions imposed by Nintendo on the system.

Extracting Game Files and Developing Exploits

The matter was not limited to running applications but extended to extracting game files (RomFS) from the device, including games such as The Duskbloods and Mario Kart World. This step raises technical concerns regarding the possibility of decrypting the device's games, which could lead in the future to the creation of playable copies (ROMs) outside the official system environment.

What Does This Mean for Users?

The technical significance of this event lies in the nature of the discovered vulnerabilities. While the first exploit released by Hajhamid required a constant connection to a computer (Tethered exploit) to reactivate it upon every reboot, recent reports indicate that the developer Gezine has succeeded in developing an "untethered" exploit. If these reports are confirmed, it means the possibility of integrating the entire exploit chain into the system save data, granting users permanent and stable access to system privileges without the need for external tools every time.

These developments remain in their early stages and place Nintendo before new security challenges related to protecting its new system from unauthorized software modifications.
