Hyundai has officially announced the opening of order books for the updated version of its flagship electric vehicle, the "IONIQ 6," in the UK market. This updated model comes with radical changes including exterior design enhancements, increased battery capacity, and comprehensive interior technological developments, reinforcing its position as one of the most efficient electric vehicles in the global market.
Streamlined Design and Advanced Interior Technologies
In the new update, Hyundai focused on enhancing the visual identity of the car, which it describes as the "Electrified Streamliner." Exterior changes include a redesigned front fascia known as the "shark nose" with slim daytime running lights, while the black lower trims have been extended to the doors. At the rear, the company replaced the prominent wing with an extended "ducktail" design, giving the car a cleaner and more aggressive look.
Inside, the cabin has undergone a comprehensive overhaul, featuring a dual-tone leather steering wheel, a digital side mirror, and a "bridge" type center console that includes a wireless phone charger and physical buttons for easy control. The car also adopts Hyundai's new infotainment system, which includes dual 12.3-inch screens for navigation and entertainment, with full wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Performance and Battery: Efficiency Beyond Expectations
The base version of the updated "IONIQ 6" relies on a new 84 kWh battery, a notable upgrade that allows the car to travel a distance of up to 422 miles (approximately 679 kilometers) on a single charge for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model with 225 horsepower. Energy consumption efficiency in this model reaches 4.6 miles per kilowatt-hour, a figure that places it at the forefront of its class in terms of efficiency.
The car is available in the UK in three main trims: Premium, N-Line, and N-Line Evo. While the N-Line trim offers a more dynamic sporty design, the higher N-Line Evo trim comes with luxury features including comfort relaxation seats, a power sunroof, a Head-Up Display (HUD), as well as a premium BOSE sound system and advanced parking and collision avoidance technologies.
Charging Technologies and Market Availability
Thanks to the advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, the "IONIQ 6" maintains its superior fast-charging capability, allowing the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes using DC chargers up to 350 kW.
Prices for the car in Britain start at around £33,240 (approximately $45,000), and customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027. Interestingly, the US market will not receive this comprehensive update, as Hyundai has decided to discontinue the standard "IONIQ 6" model in the United States after 2026, keeping only the high-performance N version.
What Practically Changes for Users?
- Longer driving range: Thanks to the larger battery (84 kWh), range anxiety has significantly diminished with the ability to cover over 670 km.
- Improved user experience: The return to physical buttons on the center console addresses previous user criticisms regarding the difficulty of controlling basic functions solely through screens.
- Ultra-fast charging: The 800-volt technology ensures less time spent at charging stations, which is a major competitive advantage against Tesla and Chinese competitors.
- Continuous updates: Over-The-Air (OTA) update support ensures vehicle systems and maps remain up to date without the need to visit service centers.
