The Pentagon has established a digital portal that gives contractors, startups, investors, and universities a direct pathway to participate in the “Golden Dome for America” program, the missile defense project whose architecture remains largely classified. The “Golden Dome for America Ecosystem Hub” was announced on August 11 during the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama.
The portal is intended to provide unclassified information about the program’s technical needs and enable companies to submit their ideas before formal contracting requests are issued. General Michael Guetlein, who leads the Golden Dome program, said the program had tried to keep its doors open as widely as possible, noting that he had met individually with more than 500 companies to discuss technologies that could contribute to the proposed missile defense system.
An Initial Channel for Companies Outside Traditional Circles
The program focuses on creating a multilayered network of sensors, command-and-control systems, and interceptors to protect the United States from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic missiles, and other aerial threats. However, the high classification levels surrounding many technical discussions have made it difficult for startups and new participants to understand the areas in which the government intends to invest.
The portal does not eliminate these security barriers, but it provides an unclassified starting point. According to Guetlein, the website receives companies’ ideas, which are then reviewed by a specialized group. The program has also established a security team to help participants protect their intellectual property and information technology systems, and to explain how threats may emerge and how to protect their results and networks.
A Data Environment and Testing Spaces for Artificial Intelligence
The program has also created a shared data environment that combines data from the government, approved contractors, and academia, making it available to each entity according to its security clearance level. The environment includes a space for data analysis testing and a separate space for companies developing artificial intelligence applications, along with security tools to protect sensitive information.
Integrating data is one of the main technical challenges facing Golden Dome, as the planned architecture depends on collecting information from military, commercial, and government sensors in a unified operational picture, enabling the rapid identification of threats and coordination of interception operations. The Pentagon wants developers to be able to build software and analytical tools using a shared data architecture rather than developing isolated systems.
An Acquisition Model Including Commercial Space Companies
The portal is part of a broader effort to bring commercial technology and private capital into the program while encouraging wider participation and greater competition. An acquisition model involving commercial space companies is already being used in Golden Dome’s space-based interceptor program. The Space Force requires competitors to invest their own capital in the early development stages before becoming eligible for larger government awards tied to specific technical achievements.
Guetlein said that 12 teams are developing prototypes. Several prime contractors have also formed teams combining established defense companies with commercial space companies: Northrop Grumman is collaborating with satellite manufacturer Apex, while Raytheon has partnered with Rocket Lab. Guetlein said these partnerships would be essential to producing large numbers of systems at a cost the government could afford.
In another part of the program, Golden Dome contracted with two companies to analyze supply-chain risks. One company examines supplier networks across multiple tiers to identify bottlenecks and vulnerabilities, while the other looks for alternative sources of supply to strengthen resilience.
