Nvidia Explores Debt Guarantee for Nscale AI Data Center in West Virginia

Nvidia is in advanced talks to guarantee multibillion-dollar debt financing for cloud computing company Nscale, aiming to support the establishment of a data center dedicated to Anthropic in the U.S. state of West Virginia. This move comes at a time when the artificial intelligence industry is striving to maintain the pace of infrastructure expansion amid growing investor concerns over inflating costs and the massive amounts of capital required.

Financial Arrangement Details and Construction Guarantees

Under the proposed arrangement, known as a residual value guarantee, Nvidia would step in if Nscale defaults on construction payments, temporarily taking over the facility and helping find a new buyer and tenant. This arrangement covers electricity and construction costs to build the center's campus in West Virginia, a notable development given that Nvidia's previous support for cloud providers was often limited to lease agreements and chip purchases rather than core construction operations.

Anthropic has signed a contract worth $44.6 billion for the first building alone in the project, which is expected to rely on Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips. The parties are also discussing a second potential deal worth approximately $45 billion for an additional building.

Challenges Facing the Nscale Project

Nscale faces mounting pressure as it prepares for an initial public offering with a valuation of up to $35 billion. The company has previously suffered from operational difficulties, having operated about 25,000 advanced AI chips in August, a small fraction of its plans to deploy around 500,000 chips. Furthermore, the project site in West Virginia encountered environmental issues involving stormwater runoff from the construction site that repeatedly flooded nearby homes, before the project received government clearance last September.

In contrast, Nvidia has provided approximately $170 billion in investments and credit support to emerging cloud computing companies and major clients, including a $1 billion convertible financing facility for Nscale in September.

Why This News Matters

This development reflects the strategic shift of major hardware manufacturers like Nvidia toward playing a direct financial guarantor role to support their clients and boost demand for their chips amid declining investor confidence in emerging cloud computing companies (neoclouds). It also comes at a time when Anthropic itself faces questions about how to fund its rapid expansion, specifically with credit rating agencies warning of a potential sub-investment grade rating after its public offering, which would raise its borrowing costs and push it to rely on strong partners to back its debt.
