Mercedes-AMG Challenges Electric Vehicle Weight with 'Axial Flux' Motors and Ultra-Fast Charging Technology

Mercedes-AMG has succeeded in providing an engineering solution to one of the biggest dilemmas of electric vehicles: excess weight and its impact on driving agility. Through its all-new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe electric vehicle, the company has proven that the transition to clean energy does not mean sacrificing the characteristic sporting performance of the AMG brand, by integrating advanced technologies in motors and energy management systems.

The Axial Flux Motor Revolution

The car relies on three Axial Flux electric motors, a technology developed by Yasa, which Mercedes acquired in 2021. These motors are characterized by their small size and light weight compared to traditional motors, which helped reduce the "weight tax" resulting from the batteries.

  • AMG GT 63 model: Provides a maximum power of up to 1,153 hp (860 kW) and a torque of 2,000 Nm, with a "Boost" mode that lasts for 63 seconds.
  • AMG GT 55 model: Provides a maximum power of up to 805 hp (634 kW) and a torque of 1,860 Nm, with a "Boost" mode that lasts for 55 seconds.

These massive capabilities allow for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just about 2.3 seconds, placing it among the ranks of supercars.

800V Architecture and Ultra-Fast Charging

Mercedes did not stop at developing the motors; it also adopted an 800V electrical architecture to enhance efficiency and charging speed. The technical prowess is highlighted here in the car's ability to receive continuous (DC) charging of up to 600 kW, an exceptional figure in the current market. In tests, the car was able to charge from 17% to 80% within just 10 minutes.

To maintain performance stability during fast charging or intense sports driving, Mercedes uses an innovative cooling system that relies on non-conductive oil flowing around the cylindrical battery cells (106 kWh capacity) to regulate their temperature with high efficiency.

What does this development change technically?

This launch represents a shift in how automotive engineers address the "mass" problem in electric vehicles. Instead of merely adding larger batteries, AMG focused on:

  • Power density: Using Axial Flux motors provides massive torque in a smaller space, which improves weight distribution.
  • Thermal management: Oil cooling technology ensures that performance does not decline (Thermal Throttling) during heavy use.
  • Reducing waiting time: Reaching a charging capacity of 600 kW narrows the gap between the traditional fuel and electric experiences.

The AMG GT 55 model is expected to be available by the end of this year with prices starting from $145,000, while the GT 63 model will arrive in early 2027 with prices starting from $175,000.
