Cloudflare Redesigns Radar to Make Internet Traffic and Outages Easier to Understand Globally

Cloudflare has launched a new design for its Radar platform, aiming to make global internet traffic and outage data easier to understand and use by journalists, less-specialized researchers, human rights advocates, policymakers, and ordinary users, without abandoning the details relied on by network operators and academic researchers.

Since Radar launched in 2020, the platform has provided a real-time window into global internet trends, drawing on Cloudflare’s network. However, the company says the previous interface presented a broad range of data in a way that made it harder to absorb: multiple cards within a “bento box”-like layout were given similar visual weight, while vertical cards disrupted the natural reading flow and made the platform experience less consistent with the rest of Cloudflare’s services.

The Map Becomes the Entry Point

The new design relies on an interactive map as a familiar visual reference for users from different backgrounds. Cloudflare believes that understanding internet activity, despite transcending national borders in many respects, is connected to geography in daily life; the map has therefore become an entry point to country data, trends, and data stories.

Outages and traffic appear at the top of the page. The company chose to present outages first because they are among the indicators most closely tied to time and the actual state of the internet, while traffic data reflects the volume of data covered by Radar and its breadth. The map is not limited to presentation; it is also used to navigate from the global view to more specific details.

Organizing Data Instead of Showing It All at Once

Previous chart tools have been replaced with a tab-based flow. These tabs display concise statistics that help users form an initial picture of the platform’s capabilities, then direct them to explore the data in greater depth. According to Cloudflare, this organization creates a clearer information sequence and reduces the sense of crowding, while offering a glimpse of the types of data available.

The redesign also came in response to user feedback, including the difficulty of presenting Radar to students because new users found the platform confusing. Cloudflare links visual consistency with its other services to ease of use and trust among external visitors.

Balancing Technical Depth and Readability

While developing the design language, Cloudflare compared three frameworks within its ecosystem: marketing pages, content experiences such as the blog and developer documentation, and product experiences. It concluded that Radar lies at the intersection of these frameworks; it is a public, content-rich data product, so the design combines the approachability of marketing pages, the organization and navigation of content experiences, and maintainability through the Kumo components used in the product system.

The map went through several stages. Early versions appeared overly dense because they attempted to convey credibility through an abundance of visual elements, while later versions moved closer to a marketing style at the expense of the feeling that the data was current. According to the company, the current design falls between the two: it presents the data as live while making it easier to read.

Why Does This Change Matter?

Cloudflare says that its presence in approximately 20% of total web traffic gives Radar the ability to tell unique stories about the state of the internet. In practice, the announcement does not add a new type of data so much as change how users access, understand, and share it. This expands the platform’s potential audience while keeping its deep data structure geared toward specialized users.

Cloudflare describes the redesign as a foundational step in Radar’s evolution, with future plans for tools, visualizations, and data-storytelling frameworks that reduce friction for new users. However, the source provides no independent measurements of improved usability or details about specific changes to the data sources, and the success of the new interface will remain tied to its ability to achieve the same balance between simplification and accuracy. The company invited users to send feedback through Radar accounts on X and Bluesky or by email at radar@cloudflare.com.
