Volkswagen Reveals Electric ID. Tiguan to Replace ID.4 and ID.5

Volkswagen has revealed the ID. Tiguan electric car, which will assume a central role in the company’s lineup as the ID.4 and ID.5 are gradually retired. The new vehicle draws on the Tiguan name, Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide, with updated design, technology, and cabin compared with the two previous electric models.

Launch background

Volkswagen has sold more than 950,000 ID.4 and ID.5 vehicles since their introduction in 2021, and they have been among the main pillars of its electric vehicle lineup. The company says the ID. Tiguan combines the success of the conventional Tiguan with the standing of the ID.4 and ID.5 in the electric vehicle market.

The vehicle abandons the streamlined design and integrated door handles of the ID.4 in favor of a taller SUV profile, a wider front end, and conventional pull handles. Volkswagen describes the new look as closer to premium vehicles, although this remains a marketing assessment by the company.

Battery and performance options

  • Rear-wheel drive with 140 kilowatts of power and a 58-kilowatt-hour battery.
  • Rear-wheel drive with 210 kilowatts of power and a 77-kilowatt-hour battery.
  • 4MOTION all-wheel drive with 220 kilowatts of power and a 77-kilowatt-hour battery.

The ID. Tiguan offers a range of up to 372 miles, or 600 kilometers, according to the European WLTP standard, depending on the battery and drivetrain configuration. Towing capacity is approximately 1,800 kilograms with the 58-kilowatt-hour battery, rising to 2,000 kilograms with the 77-kilowatt-hour battery.

The vehicle supports one-pedal driving as standard, along with Connected Travel Assist and a Vehicle-to-Load feature that allows external devices such as an electric grill or electric bicycle to be powered.

A different cabin with a practical focus

The cabin includes a 10-inch Digital Cockpit display and a 15-inch central display, with an optional 12-inch display for the front passenger. Volkswagen has also brought physical buttons back to the area below the central display and the steering wheel.

The interface includes a Retro mode that displays gauges inspired by the Golf IV, along with a virtual garage that allows users to select classic models such as the Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, Tiguan I, Race Touareg, and Beetle.

Launch timing and open questions

Volkswagen will begin selling the ID. Tiguan in Germany and several other European markets on October 13, with four trim levels: Trend, Life, Style, and R-Line. The starting price is 42,695 euros, or approximately $47,800. After its launch in Europe and by early 2027, the vehicle will replace the ID.4 in North America.

The company has not yet announced U.S. pricing or equipment details for that market. The current ID.4 has an EPA-estimated range of approximately 291 miles for the rear-wheel-drive version and 263 miles for the all-wheel-drive version; therefore, the ID. Tiguan’s range in the United States could exceed 300 miles, but this remains an unconfirmed estimate until Volkswagen publishes official EPA figures.

Why does this news matter? The ID. Tiguan is not merely a nominal addition to Volkswagen’s lineup; it repositions the company’s most important electric vehicle in a major SUV segment, with improvements in range, towing, and the user experience. However, U.S. pricing, EPA-certified performance, and availability details outside Europe remain points the company has not yet resolved.
