Expanding Godot Engine Support in Rider IDE to Include GDScript, C# and C++

JetBrains has announced the renewal of its Platinum sponsorship for the Godot Foundation until 2027, continuing its efforts to integrate support for the popular Godot game engine into the Rider integrated development environment. Over the past year, support has expanded to combine GDScript, C#, and C++ GDExtension into a single unified platform, noting that the environment is free for non-commercial use, which includes hobbyist projects, learning, open-source projects, and content creation.

Recent versions and updates, including Early Access Program (EAP) builds for 2026.3, have seen substantial additions to improve the developer experience. Among the most prominent improvements are the full integration of GDScript support, the introduction of advanced tools for debugging and code testing, and the provision of an official Godot editor plugin to facilitate linking and setup. The company also showcased custom project templates for plugin developers to accelerate getting started and avoid repetitive manual coding.

Linking Scripts and Scenes and Facilitating Debugging

Rider allows developers to easily track links between scripts, scenes, signals, and resources while working. Through the Scene Preview window, nodes can be dragged directly into scripts to insert their paths or generate appropriate configuration variables. Modern versions also provide customizable formatting tools, improved resource reference resolution, extensive improvements in tracking signal connections, and auto-completion for unique node names.

Regarding debugging, the software supports conditional breakpoints and logging data during runtime without frequently interrupting the game. In C# projects, the environment provides advanced analysis tools and integration with the test runner, in addition to the ability to simultaneously debug both GDScript and C#. Furthermore, support for C++ development and GDExtension libraries allows handling large files with high efficiency, benefiting from performance improvements on Linux and Mac platforms.

What Changes Practically for Developers?

This integration represents a practical step that unifies Godot game development tools in a single workspace rather than scattering efforts across multiple programs. Developers can take advantage of ready-made project templates to develop native C++ extensions via CMake, and use the Rider Integration plugin available in the Godot Asset Store to establish the link with a single click and bypass complex manual configurations.
