Google has announced the global rollout of the "Guided Learning" feature within the Google Classroom platform. This new feature aims to change how students interact with complex academic concepts, relying on artificial intelligence technologies to provide step-by-step coaching instead of simply offering ready-made answers, which enhances students' ability for deep and independent understanding.
Research Findings: Tangible Superiority in Academic Performance
This launch is supported by field study results that have proven the effectiveness of this educational approach. In a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted at the University of Tokyo on more than 300 students, student performance was tested while studying statistics lessons using different tools:
- Students who used traditional digital tools achieved an improvement in their scores of 5.3 percentage points.
- Students who used the "Guided Learning" feature via the Gemini app achieved an improvement of 8.1 percentage points.
These results represent a 1.5 times increase in learning gains compared to traditional methods within a single study session, indicating that technology that guides the student rather than shortcutting the thinking process leads to better educational outcomes.
The tests also included a field trial in three high schools in the United Kingdom that lasted for four weeks. The results showed that the feature helped teachers manage their time better, as the AI handled initial student questions during independent work, allowing teachers more time to provide individual and direct support to students who truly needed it.
What Changes Practically for Teachers and Students?
The new feature is not limited to providing assistance to students; it also gives teachers control tools and deeper insight into the path of the educational process. Through the new update in Google Classroom, teachers can do the following:
- Assign Guided Lessons: Specify certain study materials for the AI to guide students through step-by-step.
- Track Academic Progress: Obtain analytical insights into how students interact with study materials and the points of difficulty they face.
- Link Conversations to Curricula: The feature allows teachers to "pin" or link AI conversations to uploaded curricula, ensuring the student remains within the context of the specific lesson and preventing distraction by external topics.
This development comes within the framework of Google's effort to integrate generative AI into education in a way that serves the scientific principles of active learning, while maintaining the teacher's role as the primary leader of the educational process inside the classroom.
