The new Volkswagen electric car ID. Polo has claimed the overall title of "2027 German Car of the Year" after excelling in the entry-level vehicle category priced under 25,000 euros, surpassing strong international competition to secure first place among all participating vehicles. This overall victory marks the second consecutive year that the Volkswagen Group achieves this feat with a compact electric vehicle, following Skoda Elroq's win last year.
Specifications of the Economy Category and Pricing
Volkswagen opened ordering for the ID. Polo model equipped with a 52 kWh battery at the end of April, before adding the base model in July equipped with a 37 kWh battery starting at 24,995 euros (equivalent to $28,000), achieving a WLTP driving range of up to 207 miles (334 kilometers). Additionally, the Life and Style trims are available with the same 37 kWh battery starting at 29,195 euros ($32,500).
The car supports DC fast charging up to 90 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 23 minutes.
Market Performance and Order Volumes
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, confirmed that this prestigious recognition underscores the value represented by the ID. Polo, pointing out that the entry-level electric model brings electric mobility to where it makes the greatest impact in people's daily lives. He added that the company has received over 50,000 purchase orders since orders opened at the end of April.
This car is the first in a family of what the company calls "a true Volkswagen again," carrying a storied name along with the brand's new design language (Pure Positive). The award's judging panel includes nearly 50 automotive journalists from Germany and around the world.
What is Practically Changing in the Market?
These awards reflect a broader shift, with electric vehicles dominating across various categories this year. The Kia PV5 van won in the compact car category, while the electric Mercedes-Benz GLC took the lead in the luxury category, and the Hyundai electric sports car (IONIQ 6 N) won the 2027 performance car title in Germany.
Meanwhile, Martin Sander, head of sales at the group, explained that the company is witnessing a remarkable acceleration in the shift toward fully electric vehicles in its domestic market. The Volkswagen Group's urban electric car family has received nearly 150,000 orders since serial production began in June, all of which rely on the MEB+ platform.
