On August 24, 2026, Suzuki revealed its fully electric e SKY, the Japanese company’s first battery-powered kei-class passenger car. Suzuki is preparing to launch the model in Japan in fall 2026, but it has not yet announced the price or final specifications of the production version.
The e SKY is intended for the typical daily uses of kei cars, such as commuting to work and school, shopping, and transporting family members. Suzuki says the vehicle was developed under the “Easy to Switch” concept, with the aim of making the transition from a gasoline-powered kei car to an electric vehicle easier for current users.
Improving Range Within Kei Dimensions
The model is the production version of the Vision e-Sky concept, which Suzuki showed at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo. The e SKY has retained almost the same basic dimensions as the concept, measuring 3,395 millimeters in length, 1,475 millimeters in width, and 1,625 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 2,460 millimeters.
However, the reference range has increased from more than 270 kilometers in the concept to 310 kilometers in the new model’s preliminary information, without increasing the vehicle’s length or width. This improvement indicates that Suzuki focused during development on efficiency and extracting greater distance from the same small pack, rather than enlarging the vehicle to accommodate a larger battery.
The vehicle’s curb weight is approximately 1,030 kilograms. It also uses a lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 26 kilowatt-hours, along with a reference energy consumption of 97 watt-hours per kilometer. However, the range figure remains an estimate and has not yet received certification under Japan’s WLTC testing cycle.
Electric Powertrain and Charging for Daily Use
The e SKY is built on the HEARTECT-e architecture dedicated to electric vehicles and uses an integrated electric axle that combines the motor, inverter, and reduction gears. The battery is positioned beneath the vehicle floor, while Suzuki worked to improve aerodynamics, including the underbody, while retaining the raised, compact design typical of kei cars.
The vehicle supports DC fast charging at up to 50 kilowatts, reaching 80% charge in approximately 25 minutes according to the concept’s figures. AC charging takes approximately 4.5 hours when using a 6-kilowatt connection, or about eight hours at 3 kilowatts. The vehicle also provides an external 100-volt, 1,500-watt outlet, along with a heat-pump climate-control system to help reduce the energy consumption associated with heating and cooling.
Why Does This Model Matter?
The e SKY enters a market that already includes small electric vehicles such as the Nissan Sakura, Mitsubishi eK X EV, Honda N-ONE e:, and BYD Racco. Suzuki’s bet is therefore not on offering the longest range or the largest battery, but on matching the vehicle to the nature of urban and suburban travel in Japan.
In practical terms, the model demonstrates an approach that starts with usage requirements before determining battery size. The low weight and smaller battery may reduce the amount of materials and energy required to operate the vehicle, but this solution has clear limits; the source does not establish that the same specifications are suitable for long trips, continuous highway driving, or carrying heavy loads.
