MAVI, an AI-powered hiring marketplace connecting U.S. companies with global finance and accounting talent, announced its emergence from stealth and revealed a $4 million seed funding round. The platform has more than 3,000 accounting professionals and focuses on recruiting experienced professionals who can use AI tools and review their outputs.
MAVI, the company founded by Molly Liu and Aman Puri in 2023, announced its emergence from stealth after raising $4 million in a seed funding round led by Harlem Capital last year. The company operates an AI-powered marketplace that helps U.S. companies gain access within days to global finance professionals and accountants experienced with AI tools.
MAVI’s service is not limited to matching companies with candidates; the company says it also handles aspects of cross-border hiring, including contracts, legal compliance, and payroll. It focuses on full-time, long-term hires, particularly for mid-level and senior positions that augment internal finance teams rather than replacing them entirely.
A Problem That Goes Beyond a Shortage of Accountants
Molly Liu, MAVI’s co-CEO, believes that the U.S. accounting sector faces two interconnected problems: the profession is shrinking, and some of the remaining workers do not have the skills needed to use AI to support company growth. At the same time, U.S. companies are hesitant to hire global talent because of management and contracting complexities, or because of doubts about their level of competence.
MAVI says it has more than 3,000 accounting professionals on its platform, and that its base of enterprise customers includes personal-care products company Athena Club.
What Is Changing in the Accountant’s Role in Practice?
According to Liu, the spread of automation tools does not mean that the need for human expertise will disappear. Rather, eliminating many entry-level roles could reduce the number of workers who gain the experience needed to reach the mid-level, increasing pressure on experienced professionals at later stages.
MAVI defines an AI-proficient accountant as someone who combines accounting and finance fundamentals with the ability to direct AI tools, review their errors, integrate large language models into workflows, and work with enterprise resource planning systems and tools originally designed for AI. This differs from a traditional accountant who may have a strong accounting foundation but limited experience managing these tools.
Why Does This Development Matter?
MAVI’s move reveals a shift in the accountant hiring market: value is measured not only by providing remote employees, but also by those employees’ ability to exercise professional judgment in an increasingly automated environment. The company’s central idea is that AI may handle repetitive work, but it does not eliminate the need for people capable of evaluating results and making decisions in sensitive tasks.
However, the announcement provides no independent evidence of candidate quality or customer outcomes, nor does it clarify the funding terms, pricing model, or the platform’s reach beyond the United States. Therefore, MAVI’s ability to turn this concept into broad and sustainable hiring remains an open question.
