BYD Unveils the Seven-Seat Atto 8 Electric SUV With a Range Exceeding 400 Miles

BYD unveiled the Atto 8 at the Paris Motor Show, a flagship seven-seat electric SUV targeting the European market. The vehicle is BYD’s first model in Europe to combine second-generation Blade batteries with the Flash Charging system, and the rear-wheel-drive version offers a range of up to 405 miles, or more than 600 kilometres, under the WLTP standard.

Fast charging in five minutes

BYD says the Flash Charging system can raise the battery charge from 10% to 80% in just five minutes, while charging from 10% to 97% takes about nine minutes. Even at temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius, the vehicle needs 12 minutes to charge the battery from 20% to 97%, according to the company’s figures.

These figures mean that BYD is focusing with the Atto 8 on reducing downtime, rather than only increasing battery capacity and range. However, these results remain figures announced by the company, and their practical verification will depend on charging conditions and infrastructure compatible with the system.

Two versions with different motors

The Atto 8 comes in two fully electric versions. The Design RWD relies on a single rear motor producing 456 horsepower, or 340 kilowatts, and 365 newton-metres of torque, accelerating from zero to 62 miles per hour in eight seconds. It uses a BYD Blade 2.0 battery with a capacity of 115 kilowatt-hours and a WLTP range of up to 405 miles.

The Excellence AWD adds an electric motor at the front, bringing total output to 764 horsepower, or 570 kilowatts, and torque to 775 newton-metres. This version accelerates from zero to 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds, but its range drops to 374 miles under WLTP.

What does it offer users?

The vehicle is 5,040 millimetres long, 1,996 millimetres wide and 1,760 millimetres high, placing it in the large electric SUV category alongside the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9. The cabin includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, a 26-inch head-up display and a 15.6-inch central infotainment screen with Google Built-in.

The front seats and the outer seats in the second row include heating, ventilation and massage functions, along with an independent control panel for climate control in the rear rows. The vehicle also offers a 2.39-square-metre panoramic glass roof, up to 1,960 litres of cargo space when the second and third rows are folded, and 270 litres with all three rows in use, in addition to a 136-litre front trunk.

The Design RWD version gets a 10-speaker audio system, while the Excellence AWD adds a DiSound system comprising 21 speakers and a front refrigerator.

Availability and open questions

BYD plans to begin selling the Atto 8 through its European dealers during the first quarter of 2027, but it has not yet announced pricing. Since the vehicle will be positioned above the Ti 7, a seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV, the company expects its price in the United Kingdom to start at a level slightly above £47,995, or approximately $65,000.

The significance of the announcement lies in combining long range and very fast charging with a large family-oriented configuration, but the final price and the availability of charging stations capable of delivering Flash Charging performance will determine how effectively the Atto 8 can translate these specifications into a practical advantage for European buyers.
