Technical demonstration of ultra-fast charging capabilities
BMW conducted a live demonstration in Southern California to showcase the fast-charging capabilities of its new iX5 50 xDrive electric vehicle, where the car successfully reached a peak charging rate of 464 kW, exceeding the company's initial estimates of 460 kW. This test was conducted in collaboration with IONNA and Alpitronic to provide the necessary infrastructure for this level of power.
Sixth generation of eDrive technology
These results are based on the sixth generation (Gen6) of BMW's eDrive system, which operates on 800-volt technology. This new technical system includes several fundamental improvements compared to the fifth generation:
- Battery efficiency: Use of cylindrical cells that provide 20% higher energy density compared to previous prismatic cells.
- Performance: An increase in driving range and charging speeds of up to 30%.
- Motors: Integration of new high-efficiency electric motors within the all-wheel-drive system.
What does this mean for users?
These figures represent a qualitative leap in the electric vehicle charging experience; they allow for adding up to 170 miles (approximately 273 km) of range in just 10 minutes. The vehicle, which carries a 144 kWh battery, can also charge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes. Although 460 kW represents the peak charging rate, the average charging rate remains very high, significantly reducing downtime at charging stations during long trips.
Availability and production
The iX5 60 xDrive model is scheduled to launch in the US market during the first quarter of 2027, with a starting price of $79,800. The company plans to begin production of the vehicle at its Spartanburg plant, making it the first fully electric BMW to be manufactured within the United States. Estimates indicate that the vehicle will provide a driving range of up to 435 miles on a single charge, with an acceleration capability from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
