Grounded startup raises $5 million to outfit electric and combustion-powered trucks

Detroit-based startup Grounded has raised $5 million in a seed funding round and simultaneously announced the opening of a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility to expand its commercial truck outfitting business. The company is adapting electric- or fuel-powered vehicles to meet the needs of small businesses, fleets, and institutions.

Participants in the round included previous Grounded backers, including Also Capital and Chicago-based The 81 Collection, along with Animal Capital, Michigan Outdoor Innovation Fund, and investors described by founder and CEO Sam Shapiro as SpaceX alumni.

From road-trip vehicles to commercial vehicles

Grounded was founded in 2022 with the idea of outfitting electric trucks designed for a mobile lifestyle, using a modular system resembling reconfigurable building blocks. The company initially targeted models such as the Ford E-Transit and General Motors BrightDrop before redirecting its business toward outfitting vehicles for small businesses.

The shift came as the U.S. electric vehicle market faced more challenging conditions. General Motors discontinued the BrightDrop model last year, while Ford canceled plans to produce a new generation of electric Transit vans. These developments prompted Grounded to expand the range of vehicles it can work on rather than limiting its business to electric models.

New facility and a system independent of vehicle type

Production at the new Detroit facility will begin in August 2026, with production capacity set to increase next year, according to the company. Grounded plans to develop its modular business so that it is independent of vehicle type, allowing its equipment to be adapted to the needs of different fleets, whether they use electric vehicles or vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Shapiro previously said in a post that the company would use up its available inventory of BrightDrop vehicles as it transitioned to other models, including fuel-powered Ford Transit vans and Mercedes-Benz Sprinters. He also pointed to the possibility of using electric and hybrid options offered by startup Harbinger.

What changes in practice for customers?

This approach means that Grounded’s core product is no longer tied to a specific type of truck, but rather to the layer the company builds on top of the vehicle chassis: the design, materials, power system, and Grounded+ software. These components can transform the vehicle into a mobile clinic, command center, camper van, or mobile café, depending on the use case.

The shift therefore allows the company to work with customers who cannot yet adopt electric vehicles, whether because of infrastructure or operational requirements. At the same time, Grounded retains the ability to outfit electric and hybrid vehicles when they are appropriate for the customer.

Grounded has customers in the commercial, medical, and veterinary sectors, including Colgate, Nokia, Wayne State University Medical, and Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii. Chief Product Officer Nadia Meyer said the company is seeing notable growth among food and beverage and public safety customers, along with other sectors.
