BYD confirmed that the new electric Denza N8 will offer a range of up to 1,003 kilometers according to the CLTC standard, along with charging technology that raises the battery level from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. The company is preparing to launch the five-seat sport utility vehicle in China next month, without yet revealing the price or final specifications list.
Long Range and a Large Battery
The Denza N8 appeared in the Chinese market in 2023 as a luxury midsize-to-large SUV and initially used a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The previous version offered a total range of 1,003 kilometers according to CLTC when combining a full charge with fuel in the tank, but it was discontinued after less than a year because of weak sales, according to the source material.
The new generation switches to a fully electric powertrain and uses BYD’s Blade Batteries 2.0 with a capacity of 130.15 kilowatt-hours. The company says the vehicle achieves a purely electric range of 1,003 kilometers, the same figure achieved by the previous hybrid version when fuel was included.
The vehicle supports Flash Charging technology, which enables charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes. Charging from 10% to 97% takes nine minutes, according to figures announced by Denza. The available information does not include details about testing conditions or actual charging performance outside the stated testing environment.
Powertrain Options and High Performance
Data from the approval for the sale of new-energy vehicles issued by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that the N8 measures 5,150 millimeters in length, 1,999 millimeters in width, and 1,820 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 3,075 millimeters.
The vehicle will be available in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive version, with two power options: one producing 320 kilowatts, or 429 horsepower, and the other producing 370 kilowatts, or 496 horsepower. It will also offer an all-wheel-drive version equipped with three motors on BYD’s e3 platform, with a 270-kilowatt front motor and two rear motors producing 310 kilowatts each. The total announced output for this version reaches 890 kilowatts, or 1,193 horsepower.
Large Screens and a Different Cabin Direction
Denza also revealed part of the interior, which abandons the floating infotainment screen common in several modern vehicles in favor of a huge 30-inch screen that extends nearly across the dashboard toward the passenger side.
The vehicle also includes a 43-inch PHUD panoramic head-up display, equivalent to approximately 1.1 meters, extending beneath the windshield. Other equipment includes ambient lighting, luxury seats, a wireless phone charger, and a three-spoke steering wheel.
Why Does This Announcement Matter?
The announcement combines two notable figures in the electric-vehicle market: a tested range exceeding 1,000 kilometers and extremely fast charging. In practice, this could reduce stopping time on long journeys, but the value of these promises will depend on driving conditions and the availability of infrastructure compatible with Flash Charging, in addition to the final price and the vehicle’s efficiency outside the CLTC standard.
Current information indicates that the initial launch will be limited to China, while no plans for availability in other markets have been mentioned. The fully electric Denza N8L is also scheduled to launch in September, with seating for six people and a 208-liter electric front trunk. Details regarding pricing, charging times under real-world operating conditions, and the rest of the N8’s commercial specifications remain pending.
