Jaguar Land Rover is preparing to introduce the first fully electric vehicle under the Defender brand after a camouflaged prototype of a compact SUV was spotted testing at the Nürburgring in Germany. According to the report, the vehicle, which may be called the Defender Sport EV, will make its official appearance before the end of 2026 and reach markets during 2027.
The company has not confirmed the final name or reveal date, and the available images still show a covered prototype that conceals most of the design details. However, the sighting indicates that the vehicle will retain the boxy shape and rugged features associated with the Defender brand, rather than adopting a radically separate electric design disconnected from the identity of the current models.
New Electric Platform with Expected Specifications
The vehicle will be the first JLR model to use the EMA platform, the architecture also expected to be used in the upcoming electric Range Rover Velar. According to the information provided, the platform can accommodate batteries with capacities ranging from 70 to 90 kilowatt-hours, with an expected range of no less than 300 to 320 miles, or approximately 483 to 515 kilometers.
The EMA also supports 800-volt fast charging. The platform was initially designed as an architecture dedicated to electric vehicles, but JLR said it would also support hybrid powertrains, giving the company greater flexibility to use the same architecture across different models.
What Will Change in Practice?
The electric Defender is expected to feature an all-wheel-drive system powered by two motors, along with the Terrain Response system for controlling driving modes on different surfaces. This suggests that JLR does not view the vehicle merely as a compact urban vehicle, but is instead attempting to transfer off-road capabilities to the smallest model in the Defender family.
At present, there are no official specifications for its climbing capability, ground clearance, payload, or performance in harsh conditions. The battery and range figures mentioned also remain estimates, rather than company-approved data. The cabin is expected to receive a design similar to that of the larger Defender, with larger screens and a new user interface.
Commercial Context of the Launch
The prototype's appearance follows the launch of the Range Rover Electric for sale, a vehicle starting at £154,070 in the United Kingdom and approximately $140,000 in the United States. The Defender Sport EV is therefore expected to be positioned below the current Defender, which has a starting price, although JLR has not announced a price or specific markets for the new vehicle.
The model is also linked to the company's plan to expand Defender's business in the United States. During an investor update in June, PB Balaji, JLR's chief executive officer, said the company aspired for its US business in the coming years to reach the size of JLR's entire current business. However, the sighting of the prototype alone does not establish the launch date or availability scope, and the key details—from the price and final specifications to production and markets—will remain dependent on the official announcement.
