Philadelphia Incident Reveals Complete Detachment of Tesla Cybercab Door Panel

A Tesla Cybercab lost the driver-side exterior door panel after an incident in Philadelphia, with no information available to determine responsibility or whether Tesla’s driving system was operating at the time. The incident also highlights Tesla’s absence from the list of entities authorized to operate automated vehicles in Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia Incident Reveals Complete Detachment of Tesla Cybercab Door Panel

A Tesla Cybercab was involved in an incident this week on South Broad Street in Philadelphia, and the driver-side exterior door panel detached completely. The images show the inner door frame, window regulator, and wiring, while the door glass appears intact and there is no obvious bending in the structure behind the panel. The only other visible damage consists of a dent in the trim below the door and scratches on the rear side section.

A Reddit user posted the images after spotting the vehicle but did not witness the moment of impact. Another image shows a dark sedan behind the Cybercab, without confirmation that it was involved in the incident. There is also no information about whether anyone was injured or which party caused the collision.

A Replaceable Design in an Incident That Remains Unresolved

The Cybercab uses pre-formed plastic exterior panels, with the color integrated into the material instead of being applied as body paint. According to a previous explanation by Lars Moravy, Tesla’s engineering executive, and Franz von Holzhausen, its head of design, the colored shell connects to a rear plastic piece, and the panel assembly is secured from the inside.

Therefore, the complete detachment of the door shell may be an expected result of this design. If the internal structure remains intact, the shell could theoretically be replaced and reattached without conventional painting procedures. However, the images alone are insufficient to determine whether the lower part of the door or other components sustained more extensive damage.

Regulatory Status Limits the Interpretation of the Vehicle’s Use

Pennsylvania requires a compliance certificate from PennDOT to operate a highly automated vehicle, including SAE Level 3 and above, regardless of whether a driver is present inside the vehicle. The list of certificate holders includes seven entities, among them Waymo, which is authorized to operate in Philadelphia with a driver, while Tesla does not appear on the list.

Gold-colored Cybercabs began appearing around Philadelphia in mid-September, and several were spotted at a Tesla store in Devon, but the company has not explained why they were there. In the absence of authorization, the source believes the vehicle was being driven manually or operating with a Level 2 driver-assistance system, with a person legally responsible behind the wheel. The images do not show whether this vehicle was equipped with a steering wheel.

Why Does This Matter?

The classification of the driving system used at the time of the incident affects federal reporting requirements. Under a general order issued by NHTSA, incidents involving automated driving systems must be reported when property damage exceeds a certain threshold, even without injuries. Incidents involving Level 2 assistance systems are not subject to the same requirement except in cases such as a fatality, transport to a hospital, airbag deployment, or a collision with pedestrians or cyclists.

The significance of the panel’s detachment remains unresolved: it could reflect a design that absorbs damage and allows for relatively quick and inexpensive replacement, or it could mean that the panel detaches more easily than it should after minor contact. The images alone prove neither interpretation, nor do they establish that Tesla software was involved in the incident.
