Ford Opens Registration for Preorder Invitations for Its Fathom Electric Truck

Ford has enabled prospective buyers to register for an invitation to preorder its new Fathom electric truck, before orders officially open in early 2027. The standard-battery version starts at $28,350, or less than $30,000 after adding the $1,595 delivery fee.

Fathom is intended to offer an electric truck at a significantly lower price than the Ford F-150 Lightning, which represented the company’s first attempt in the electric-truck market. Ford says Fathom will be the first model based on the Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, which is expected to represent a departure from the first generation of its electric vehicles.

What do we know about the truck?

Ford classifies the vehicle as a midsize four-door electric truck, but prototypes spotted during testing appear close in size to the Ford Maverick, which is generally considered a compact truck. The company has not yet announced figures for range, towing capacity, or final dimensions.

Fathom uses cobalt- and nickel-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with the battery pack positioned in the vehicle floor. Ford says this design lowers the center of gravity, which could improve stability and provide a quieter, more spacious cabin. The company also claims that acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour will be close to the performance of the Mustang EcoBoost.

All trims will support the BlueCruise hands-free driving system on highways, along with bidirectional charging. Announced equipment includes a large touchscreen, direct integration of Apple Maps into the navigation system for the first time at Ford, as well as a digital key, remote control through the Ford app, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The vehicle will also come with an NACS port, according to what appeared in test models seen at a Tesla charging station.

What changes in practical terms?

If Ford maintains the announced price, Fathom could make electric trucks accessible to a broader segment of buyers compared with higher-priced models. The combination of bidirectional charging, BlueCruise, and an NACS port also places the vehicle within a use ecosystem that extends beyond daily driving alone. However, this benefit remains contingent on the disclosure of battery range, towing capacity, and the actual equipment for each trim.

Ford says the cost of owning a Fathom over five years will be lower than the cost of owning a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y, without the source providing details of the calculation or the assumptions used. The battery specifications and final pricing beyond the starting price have also not yet been settled.

Production timeline and open questions

The first prototypes are scheduled to come off the production line at the Louisville Assembly Plant, which covers 3 million square feet, during 2027, with deliveries set to begin later that same year. CEO Jim Farley said launching the vehicle at scale, at the targeted cost, and on schedule will be a major challenge, while Ford confirmed that there has been no change to the plan to launch Fathom in 2027.

Therefore, the current registration is a way to receive updates and join the list of interested parties, not a final purchase order. Before launch, Ford will need to clarify the range, towing capacity, dimensions, trims, and actual prices.
