Etsy Imposes Strict Policies to Curb Misleading AI-Generated Products

The e-commerce platform «Etsy» has announced a package of strict new rules and restrictions aimed at regulating the use of artificial intelligence in product listings, in an effort to curb the rise of misleading content known as «AI slop» on the platform. The company explained in an official post that many active buyers struggle to distinguish between products that include AI-generated content and real ones, alongside concerns from sellers about their work appearing alongside products that use AI in misleading ways.

Under the new policies, the platform mandates that the first image of any product listing must be a real, unedited photo displayed against a realistic background, with the images accurately representing the actual product the buyer will receive. However, the rules allow subsequent images to be edited using software tools or artificial intelligence, provided that the final output matches the physical product precisely. When uploading images, the platform will use detection tools to alert sellers with a pop-up window prompting them to disclose whether the image was created using artificial intelligence, while holding sellers responsible for issuing refunds to buyers if they receive products that differ significantly from the displayed description.

Restrictions on AI Guides, Recipes, and Graphics

The new restrictions are not limited to images alone; they extend to functional guides, design patterns, recipes, and instructions. Etsy stipulates that the information contained in these products must be human-authored and specific to the seller rather than AI-generated, while requiring them to demonstrate an «actual result» achieved using that guide. Conversely, the platform continues to allow the sale of AI-generated artwork provided that the seller clearly discloses the use of this technology in its production, alongside banning listings that are automatically generated via bots.

Why This Development Matters

This move reflects the growing challenges faced by digital e-commerce platforms in maintaining trust between buyers and independent sellers amid a flood of artificial content. With increasing user complaints about the difficulty of verifying product quality and its real-world match, platforms are moving toward imposing transparent disclosure mechanisms and strict technical controls to ensure the protection of the online shopping experience and to spare real artisans and artists the repercussions of a decline in platform reliability.
