Amazon plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to approximately 500 cities and towns in the United States by the end of 2026, compared with its current footprint covering 11 sites across 10 metropolitan areas. The company says the expansion will reach communities comprising tens of millions of customers, while the service relies on autonomous aircraft to deliver selected products from sites located primarily in areas surrounding cities.
Prime Air currently operates in areas within the states of Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. Operating locations include Tolleson in the Phoenix area, Ruskin in the Tampa area, Kansas City, Papillion in the Omaha area, Baton Rouge, and two locations in the Detroit area, in addition to sites in the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Waco areas.
Amazon plans to launch the service soon in the Chicago area in Illinois, Syracuse in New York, Cleveland in Ohio, Atlanta in Georgia, and Boise in Idaho, before adding other communities during the year. Each facility currently covers an area of approximately 175 square miles, but having a ZIP code within an announced service area does not necessarily mean that every address is eligible; the drone delivery option appears for eligible customers while they shop or at checkout.
What Is Changing in Practice for Customers?
Amazon integrates Prime Air into the regular shopping experience, using the same app, checkout interface, and customer service, including the returns policy and Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee. Customers can specify a delivery point when placing their first order, then retain it for subsequent orders or choose another area.
The service includes millions of products, such as groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medicines, and household products. Amazon says that most products weighing no more than 5 pounds and fitting into a large shoebox-sized container are eligible for delivery, representing more than 60% of the products customers frequently purchase. Orders arrive in as little as 30 minutes in the fastest cases, while most take approximately 60 minutes after the purchase is completed.
Prime members receive free fast drone delivery for orders valued at $50 or more. Members’ orders below that amount incur a $2.99 fee, while non-members pay $4.99.
How Does Amazon Say the Service Operates Safely?
Prime Air operates under an FAA Part 135 certificate, the regulatory framework also used by commercial air carriers, according to Amazon. The aircraft rely on a Detect-and-Avoid system to monitor the airspace and surrounding environment and make immediate decisions during flight, in addition to cameras and sensors for navigation and obstacle detection.
The company explains that camera data is processed onboard the aircraft for safe-navigation purposes, and that the aircraft do not track individuals or record their movements. There is also no live-streaming service monitored by a human operator. Upon reaching the delivery point, the aircraft checks that the area is clear of people, animals, and vehicles before releasing the package.
Prime Air’s Place Among Other Delivery Options
Amazon positions Prime Air as a 30-minute delivery option for up to millions of products, while Amazon Now provides similar delivery to dozens of cities through thousands of fresh and household products. The company also offers one-hour or three-hour delivery options for more than 90,000 products, and same-day delivery for millions of products in more than 10,000 cities and towns.
